Thirty-ritis ....

It is official! I am now afflicted with the disease “thirty-ritis”, two weeks after a certain journalist! Traditionally, thirty for a man is the age when a flower blossoms, but thirty for a woman is when the flower starts to wilt. Thirty is the age of glory for a man, but thirty is the age where a woman is “over the hill”.

After all, between the ages of twenty to thirty, a woman had been moulded by society to graduate, find a job, find a man, get hitched, and have at least two kids by the age of thirty. To a man, that is the age when his career is at the peak, after army life, university, starting out. So thirty is usually the age when he starts thinking of settling down.

Not so for a woman. By the time she is thirty and still single, she is as good as being left on the shelf. Men her age have a pool of younger, prettier and more fertile ladies to choose from. Her career may be at the peak, but her personal life may be in a mess. She may be desolate, isolated, lonely, thus focus all her energy into her job, making people’s lives a living hell. Hence the term “old maid”.

But not for a modern woman. A modern, educated, professional woman will view thirty as the new twenty. In her twenties, she would have her fair share of starting outs – be it in career or relationships. She would have a rocky time in various aspects. She would have been emotional, idealistic, dreamy, ditsy, full of zest for the world but being let down by the ugliness the world which she loved dished out to her. She starts freaking out over her looks and figure, which is an irony because the twenties are when a woman is about the prettiest.

Then when she turns thirty, she will look back at the last ten years and wondered about the many mistakes she made, the tears she shed, the regrets, the bittersweet memories. And she is all the more determined to live life to the fullest, to be the epitome of the modern sassy woman, to feel beautiful inside and out. She exudes a certain charm and confidence which she never had in her twenties, but manages to attain the moment she turns thirty. She finds herself getting more attractive and loving every minute of it!

Thirty to me is a new stage of life. Looking back over the past decade, I have had a rather colourful ten years. Ups, downs, happiness, sadness, with the years flitting by with nary a dash of worry. Yet now I feel my life is only just beginning – a new decade, new opportunities, new challenges, new perspectives. The twenties were a time of experimenting, of learning from mistakes, of growing up, of maturing.

Whatever bad things that happened to me, I had it all (almost) in my twenties. Struggles with identity, job hopping, heartbreaks, broken relationships, cheated of love and money, almost bankrupt, major sickness. I was at the peak of fertility, and now, judging from how my body functions, I am no longer at the peak, which makes me worry if I can still conceive if and when that happens. I was at the peak of brain power where I could learn and retain things fast, but now, I find myself slowing down a little, although with a bit more experience that I can relate to.

Thus, the next decade will be when things turn around, when good things happen instead of bad. The thirties will be a time of maturity, of charm, zest, experience, beauty. It will be ten years of being beautiful and confident, of handling life matters effectively and taking things in stride, instead of taking flight or being silent at the first sign of trouble.

Turning thirty for a woman is a good age, because it will be the age when she has been through certain experiences and grown from them, the age when her career is stable and the age when she is ready and willing to commit, the age when she knows what it is like to be in and how to handle a relationship and a marriage. She will no longer be a little girl but a real sophisticated woman! I am sure looking for great times ahead in the next ten years!

NDP 08

080808. Triple Eight. That would have been a special day indeed. And it was! The Beijing Olympics started with a big bang, and lots of pomp and fanfare. In comparison, the celebration for National Day (Happy 43rd Birthday anyway!) paled in comparison. But I believe the contingents and all participants have already tried their best to put up a good show. Their determination, endurance and discipline is admirable indeed, imagine since the organisers started planning immediately after the last National Day, and the contingent and participants started practicing from April onwards, burning their weekends and some weekdays.

It started pouring before the actual parade started. I was worried on how the parade could go on, considering the last time it rained on National Day was like forty years ago. So far, the skies have been pretty good until yesterday. Luckily by the time the parade started, the rain had become a drizzle and by the time everyone started marching in, most of the rain had let up. Looks like the heavens are still pretty kind to us!

First February 29

First time I am posting on February 29. The first February 29 was when I was less than two years of age, so I could not remember a thing. The second was the year my first brother was born, and I remember my mum putting my head on her tummy to feel the baby inside.

The third February 29 was the year my youngest brother was born. Come to think of it, both my parents and brothers were born during leap years, except me. Perhaps that is why I am the odd one out.

The fourth February 29, I was in lower secondary, and struggling with studies. The fifth February 29, I was in a relationship. The sixth February 29, I remember that vividly as it was during the Millennium Year. I was in another relationship, and we went out to celebrate the occasion.

Considering the length of time we had been with each other, we had only gone by one February 29. Hmmm.... a rare opportunity that day, come to think of it. If I had known, I would have celebrated it in a more meaningful way, making it more memorable.

The seventh February 29, I was on the verge of leaving the education service. And now, another four years later, so many things had happened. My life in just one year is already so colourful, let alone in four years!

Hopefully, by the time the next February 29 comes along, my life would have been more settled instead of the frivolity and status quo of the current situation. I wish to enjoy at least another ten more February 29s, with all the people I love!

International Women's Day

Yesterday, 8th March, was International Women's Day. A salute to all the wonderful women around! Although for Chinese, 8th March is not a good day for a Women's Day, as March 8 is "San Ba" in Chinese, a rather unflattering term for a woman, as that equates to being "crazy" or "ditsy". Anyway, my company gave every woman a gift set from our gallery, consisting of a mouse pad, mug and matching coaster. So sweet!

I wonder who first came up with this International Women's Day? Although whoever he (or she) was, I must thank him / her for doing that, as it is about time that women get their long-overdue recognition, for being able to juggle home, work, life and other things, when men could not even do a fraction of what women can do!

And so, this passage is a tribute to all the great women out there, which I received from my best friend yesterday :

When God created the woman, He was working late on the sixth day. An angel came by and said, "Why spend so much time on that one?" And the Lord answered, "Have you seen all the specifications I have to meet to shape her?

She must be washable, but not made of plastic, have more than two hundred moving parts which all must be replaceable and she must function on all kinds of food, she must be able to embrace several kids at the same time, give a hug that can heal anything from a bruised knee to a broken heart and she must do all this with only two hands."

The angel was impressed. "Just two hands .... impossible!" And this is the standard model?! "Too much work for one day .... wait until tomorrow and then complete her."

"I will not," said the Lord. "I am so close to complete this creation, which will be the favourite of my heart.

She cures herself when she is sick and she can work eighteen hours a day."

The angel came nearer and touched the woman. "But you have made her so soft, Lord."

"She is soft," said the Lord. "But I have also made her strong. You can't imagine what she can endure and overcome."

"Can she think?" the angel asked.

The Lord answered, "Not only can she think, she can reason and negotiate."

The angel touched the woman's cheek. "Lord, it seems this creation is leaking! You have put too many burdens on her."

"She is not leaking .... it's a tear", the Lord corrected the angel.

"What is it for?" asked the angel.

And the Lord said, "Tears are her way of expressing her grief, her doubts, her love, her loneliness, her suffering and her pride."

This made a big impression on the angel. "Lord, you are a genius. You thought of everything. The woman is indeed marvellous!"

Indeed she is! A woman has strengths that amazes man. She can handle trouble and carry heavy burdens. She holds happiness, love and opinions. She smiles when she feels like screaming. She sings when she feels like crying, cries when she is happy and laughs when she is afraid. She fights for what she believes in. Stand up against injustice. She does not take "no" for an answer, when she can see a better solution. She gives herself so her family can thrive. She takes her friend to the doctor if she is afraid.

Her love is unconditional. She cries when her kids are victorious. She is happy when her friends do well. She is glad when she hears of a birth or a wedding. Her heart is broken when a next-of-kin or friend dies. But she finds the strength to get on with life. She shows that a kiss and a hug can heal a broken heart.

There is only one thing wrong with her. She forgets what she is worth.... and many times man have to be reminded of that.

So this concludes that I am not yet a woman. Perhaps I never will be one. My mother, on the other hand, has all these qualities ... and more. That is a real woman, and a super one at that.

Have a fantastic (belated) Women's Day!

Countdown

Two more weeks.

Do I feel lucky? Maybe.

Do I feel things could be better? Yes.

Could I have made things better? Yes, definitely.

Have I done anything really good in life? No.

Do I want to achieve something good? Yes, of course!

What do I plan to do? Considering the complicating turn of events, it is hard to state out exactly what I need to do.

What do I want? Simple – love, family, friends, and lots and lots of peace. Plus prayers for all – family, friends, “enemies”, and a cleansing of my sins.

Hoping my wishes will come true this year.

A Failed Audition?

Another year has gone by, and my country is now forty-one years old. Not as old as the almost thousand-year history of England, and not as old as the more than two hundred years of American Independence, but at least we are an independent small country that tries its best in nation building.

No doubt lots of things have to be improved on, especially where the people are concerned, but in just a matter of forty years, it is already good enough to have been able to build up in such a short period of time.

I went for the choral audition yesterday, after postponing from last week. As expected, I think I botched it. :-( When I went in, there were a panel of judges, and I had to stand facing them with an accompanist on the piano.

I had to sing my first song "Think Of Me" together with the piano, then they tested my voice range, then sing my second song "On My Own" and finally the judges gave me a musical piece to sight-read.

The sight-reading was without accompaniment, which means I could only glance through the line for a minute, then sing the line according to the pitch, rhythm and tone. Not an easy feat!

With the judges all being trained in vocal performance and specialising in this area, I was so nervous when I went in! My hands were practically shaking, resulting in the paper vibrating!

When they tested my voice range, I managed to hit the highest E note. However my voice started cracking after the C, so when I tried hitting D and E, they were not projected very well. Darn! Just one more note to the F, the highest of the Soprano scale, yet I was not able to make it this critical moment!

What surprised me was that I could actually go very low. I managed to reach the lowerst D-minor note, something I have never done before! I always thought I could never go lower than a middle C, and anything lower was a struggle to me, thus I could never sing any song in low pitch. Yet somehow I managed to go so low yesterday.

It was not the highest I ever reached, since I had reached the highest F note before, but it was definitely the lowest I have reached. Almost one octave lower than normal. In this case, will they make me sing Alto then? I am not comfortable singing in low range, having been "trained" to sing higher range.

I was the first to be auditioned, since I was the leftover from last week. But when I went in, I never expected it to be this way. I thought it was just singing to the pianist and choral director, as was in other voice placement tests. But the scenario was worse than musical examinations and Singapore Idol!

At least in music examinations, you just go to the piano and start playing, you do not need to face the examiners. In Singapore Idol, you just need to sing a ca pella any pop song, not any of those harder musical songs!

Somehow I am not that hopeful this time round, since there are much stronger singers than me. Some of my choral mates are involved in other choirs as well. The Lyric Opera Chorus is not the only chorus they are in.

Besides, their voices are more polished, since a lot of them receive formal voice training, and there are stronger soprano voices as well. WIth competition like this, I sure do not stand a chance!

After the audition, my friends and I went to eat dinner, and enjoyed the sound of the fireworks at the same time. It had been quite some time since I last hung out with them. Really miss their company. It was good to go out and enjoy again with this cool group. Being around artistic people is really different!

A Lucky Day?

Today is the 8th of August. 88. In Chinese context, it is a lucky number, a lucky day, But then today it happens to be the fifteenth day of the Hungry Ghost month, so maybe it is not that lucky after all.

Today could have been my youngest brother’s birthday. Since he was by caesarian birth, my mum chose the 8th of August 1988 for his date of birth. Being born in the Dragon year, with a birth date like 8888, he will be a lucky shining star, which incidentally seems to be just the case.

My brothers’ birth dates were all chosen, ever since my mum’s gynaecologist had to do an emergency caesarian on her in order to remove me from her womb. I was three weeks overdue. I was supposed to be born on 1st October, but came out only about three weeks later.

Just as well, since I like my date of birth. Very nice number! And incidentally corresponded with the day in the lunar calendar when the Goddess of Mercy found enlightenment. So to my parents, it was a special day on the day I was born.

My first brother was chosen to be born on Vesak Day – the day of Buddha’s birthday. So my parents made all our birth dates special. My mum hoped that one day I could be “chosen by Kuan Yin” to, well, not sure for what actually, but then I chose to convert.

If I can choose next time, I will also like my kids to be born on special days. Hopefully one during Christmas, one during Good Friday or Easter, one during the Feast of the Virgin Mary. But as what always happens, things do not go my way always.

Father's Day Greetings!

Happy Father's Day to all the daddies in the world! I only wish my own dad is around. Many times I wonder is there a difference if there is a dad in the family, as in a proactive dad who takes care of the family and spends time with the children, not one who just brings in the money and neglects the family?

I always have the inkling that mothers are more important because children normally need the tender loving care of a maternal figure. Which is why in divorce cases here, mothers are most often than not given full custody of the children, especially if the kids are less than five years of age.

Then where does the father figure comes in? My grandfather passed away when my mum was less than two years of age. She hardly remembers what he looks like, except for the picture of him which my grandmother still keeps.

Whenever my granduncle visited them, my mum was always so excited. She wanted him to carry her, bounce her on his knee. It was like he became a father to her. So she told me that it is very cruel and depressing for a child to grow up in a family without a father figure.

Besides, it has been scientifically proven (according to my mum) that adults who grew up in complete families tend to be better off socially and emotionally than those who grew up in single parent families. It is like there is always a psychological barrier that they do not have fathers, so are worse off than the rest.

My father has been more laid back through the years. I hardly talk to him nowadays, plus the fact that he is mostly away. But when I was young, he was rather protective of me. He could be even more protective than my mum at times!

So this Father's Day, I want to take the opportunity to be grateful that I have a good father. He shows his love and care for me in his own ways. I only wish he is around so I can spend the day with him before I get indisposed.

Meanwhile, I have packed my things for the hospitalisation. With luck, I can be discharged tomorrow night. Hopefully all goes well and I can come home as soon as possible.

Happy Mother's Day!

Happy Mother's Day to all the great mummies out there! My brother and I brought my mum out for lunch at the Ayam Penyet Indonesian Restaurant near my area for lunch. I ordered the Ayam Penyet, Gado-Gado and Kerupok Udang and Emping for them. (Is someone drooling yet? ;-p)

Anyway it was a very filling lunch. My mum said it is really worth it because the food is nice, inexpensive and filling at the same time. I am just glad that she enjoyed the meal, it is the least I can do.

Alright, back to my studies again! Two more days to the battle!

May Day! May Day!

I love the song "First Of May" by The BeeGees. Today, the first of May, happens to be Labour Day, or what is more commonly termed "May Day", a public holiday. And luckily this time it happens to be a Monday, so we sort of got a long weekend off (if I did not have to go back to work last Saturday).

May is about the middle of the year. Time really flies so fast. It was as if in the blink of an eye, the year is almost half over. What had happened in the last few years of my life ever since the new century started?

May 2000 I was struggling with examinations. May 2001 I got officially posted out as a teacher. May 2002 I was setting and marking students' examination papers (and almost getting high blood pressure as a result).

May 2003 I was in between relatioships. May 2004 I decided to quit being a teacher. May 2005, I had my debut performance at the Esplanade Theatre, bought my digital camera, upgraded my mobile phone, officially started blogging and got dumped for the third time.

Now, May 2006, what will happen? At least I am now a baptized and Confirmed Catholic. I am struggling with examinations (again!).

And it will soon be the first anniversary of my blog. Wow! That is an achievement indeed, no matter how minor, because I finally started on something and kept it going, and never even knew it would go so far!

Happy May Day to all of you! Have a happy and enjoyable holiday!

A Valentine's Story ....

A long long time ago, on St Valentine’s Eve, in a galaxy far far away …. (well, not quite)

Girl : It is our first Valentine’s Day tomorrow. Will you be bringing me somewhere?

Guy : My classes will end early. I will be bowling with my classmates. You want to meet me there?

Girl : Oh... ok, which bowling alley will you be going?

Guy : Don’t you know which one I go to?

Girl : I know, but since you will be with your friends, I thought you may go somewhere else.

Guy : Then come find me. I don’t need to tell you everything. If you think you are smart enough, you can come find me on your own.

The next day, V-Day itself, the girl met the guy at the bowling alley. She waved to him when she caught his eye, but he did not even acknowledge her presence and continued coaching a female classmate on the right technique to hold a bowling ball. The girl wanted to bowl too, but did not want another tongue-lashing from the guy on not being able to bowl well.

There was a paper bag consisting of a gift and a bouquet of flowers next to the guy’s bag. The girl’s heart took a leap, and was really ecstatic as she for sure did not expect that. Then, one of the female classmates had to leave for a date, so she changed back into her shoes and took her things, including that particular paper bag. The girl’s hope was dashed.

The guy continued bowling for another hour, totally ignoring the girl. When he was finally done, they went out of the bowling alley …. and into the nearest hawker centre. The guy said he had nothing to give her, so he should order food for her, and ordered whatever he liked to eat. He asked if the girl could pay since he spent all his money on bowling.

The girl felt like crying, but decided not to spoil the night with her tantrums. After dinner, the girl gave the guy a very meaningful gift – an antique heart-shaped gold pocket watch, which she scrimped and saved since Christmas and hunted the whole island just to get for him. She specially had his name and a love message engraved on the inside cover of the watch. He took a look and scolded her for wasting her money on something he did not need.

They then took a slow walk around the Singapore River, where the guy kept telling her about a particular female classmate whom he so admired, and asked the girl to follow in her footsteps as he would like his girlfriend to be as pretty and elegant and smart as that classmate.

That was the girl’s very first Valentine’s Day, a day which she had waited in anticipation and looked forward to for eighteen years. Yet, when the day finally arrived, it became one of the worst days in her life.

She went home that night crying and sobbed the whole night through, and kept cursing herself for bringing the misery upon herself, as if she had not kept the date, she would have just gone home and started on her tutorials and spent a peaceful night instead.

Two years later ….

The same girl with a different guy, again celebrating their first Valentine’s Day. The scene : A high-class restaurant. The girl was holding a big bouquet of roses in one hand. The guy gave her a crystal heart-shaped necklace, complete with matching earrings, and she gave him a football jersey of his favourite team, which she again scoured the whole island for it.

Girl : This place looks expensive. And plus all the things you gave me, I worry for your pocket.

Guy : Anything for you, my dear. As long as you like it, I want this night to be your most memorable night.

Girl : This will definitely be my most memorable night. It is practically a dream come true ....

Guy : Remember, you are the first girl who ever made me feel this way about any one. Please do not ever leave me. I love you so much that I never ever want to lose you.

Girl : I promise ….. Of course I will never ever leave you.

A pity he never did promise not to leave her. Thus, six Valentine’s Days came and gone …. and one day, the girl’s hopes were dashed again.

Eight years after that memorable night …..

St Valentine’s again, and the girl was spending the first Valentine’s Day with yet a different guy. Come to think of it, this girl is really fickle, right? ;-p

The venue : at the guy’s place. He prepared a whole dish of stewed beef for her. She never liked stewed beef, but took it for his sake since it was a commendable effort on his part.

Girl : This is delicious! You are a good cook!

Guy : I whip up my own dishes whenever my parents are not around.

Girl : Hmmmm ….. most delicious Valentine’s meal I have ever partaken.

Guy : Maybe because it is made from LOVE.

Girl : Really? Then I must whip up something for you the next weekend then.

Guy : Ok, I’m really looking forward to it!

Now, many years later after that first ill-fated Valentine’s Day, the girl is all alone, staring at the computer, not having a date to spend the day with. She thinks of all her friends who have found love or new love, and spending the first (or many) Valentine’s Day together, and feels a slight twinge of pain.

But she is not giving up. She believes that somewhere, somehow, someone will be there for her, and perhaps by the next Valentine’s Day, she will again be spending another first Valentine’s Day with someone who truly loves her.
