I went for the local musical last night with a friend. Actually I was supposed to go with him, but then ever since he made the decision not to plunge into anything, he did not even want to go with me anymore. Which is why I said the feelings are probably not mutual. Oh well...
"Beauty World" is a musical with a simple storyline. For such a straightforward storyline, the production is excellent, as it touches on humour, love, jealousy, friendship. The songs are great, some are really touching, especially when the two of them went to the roof and gazed at the moon and stars. That was so beautiful, the slight tinge of romance in the air!
The story is on this girl from Malaysia called Ivy, who came to Singapore in the 1960s to look for her father, who abandoned her in a beauty parlour when she was a baby. She sought refuge at her penpal Rosemary's place and the only clue she had to her father's identity is a jade pendant with the words "Beauty World" engraved on it.
Beauty World is a famous cabaret. The number one lady is Lulu. Ivy took a job there, waitressing, singing and dancing at the same time. She quickly found favour with the men, incurring Lulu's rage and jealousy.
Ivy's boyfriend from Malaysia, Frankie, came to Singapore to look for her, and he stayed at Rosemary's place. He tried going to the Beauty World cabaret to look for Ivy, but Ivy saw him and tried to hide from him.
A waiter / helper at Beauty World, Ah Hock, took pity on Ivy, as he knows she is a proper girl, so he tried to protect her and shield her from the dirty old men who tried to take advantage of her.
At the end, Ivy realised that her mother is none other than Lulu herself! Lulu cried and apologised for giving her away. Frankie asked Ivy to go back with him, and assured her that his love for her will never falter, no matter who her parents are.
An excellent production! Much better than the one shown on television ten years back, played by some of the local television artistes. Why would so many people think that local productions can never be as good as foreign productions, and that we have no local talent?
The stars of the musical are good, they can sing, dance and act. One can really feel their emotions - their sadness, their rage, their happiness, their sense of loss. I enjoyed the show a lot, but in all honesty, I would have enjoyed it much more if only he is the one beside me, if only I do not miss him so much especially during the moonlight scene.
