Smogginess Tapering Off ...

Today, the haze reached super hazardous level and an all time high. It would not have been so bad if there are heavy rains coming to wash away all the haze, but unfortunately, this happens to be our hot and dry season, hence not much rain during this period. In fact, except for Sunday night, there has not been any rain for the whole week! And the haze just keeps accumulating, causing people distress and breathing difficulties.

However, for the last hour, the skies seem to have cleared a lot. At least I can finally see what is outside my office window relatively clearly, including the overhead bridge in the distance, as compared to the past few days when I could barely even make out the buildings opposite! The index seems to be dropping drastically. Seems that it has reached its peak and tapering.

Hopefully this keeps up and then we can finally have relatively clean and fresher air around! And I can start work as per normal on Monday!

Haziness ...

I just came back from a farewell lunch with my boss ... and the haze condition is getting from bad to worse! I always wonder if the scale that our government is measuring is accurate? It sure looks much worse than what is indicated on the index!

I am supposed to make a trip to Batam (again!) this weekend, to make up for the disastrous trip the last time round. I thought since this time round, I have booked a hotel around the city centre and will be mostly around the city area, hence the trip may be better? Unfortunately, due to the hazy conditions, it looks like a trip there is out of the question for now.

How long more are we going to breathe in this smog? Luckily my colleague managed to get the rounder masks so I have been living off that! Otherwise, goodness knows how much polluted air I am going to inhale!

"Blurred" Vision!

The dreaded haze is back again, this time reaching unhealthy levels! At last count, it was more than 100 and counting. If this goes on, I wonder if all would need to work from home? Good news for everyone at least.

I seriously wonder what caused the huge fire this time. Some speculate that it is the palm oil industry. But whatever it is, this is really unhealthy! I will not be surprised to see people in masks for the next few days if this goes on! As it is, my eyes are tearing already from all these smog and I could hardly see the buildings opposite!

In A Dazed Haze ...

The dreaded haze is back again. The past couple of days I have been smelling nothing but smoke and smog, and my eyes are getting all dry and teary. My face is starting to itch and my skin is starting to feel dry again. Even with the rain, the haze is not being dispersed and the smell still lingers. If this goes on, I will be living in a smoke bomb, if I am not already in one!

Another Wet (And Ill) Weekend

I was home the whole weekend as I had been ill with a combination of flu, stomach discomfort and being lethargic. Besides this, it is also another wet weekend, with massive rainfalls, the kind of weather where one just want to sleep and not do anything! I wish I can get well before the Lunar New Year, otherwise I will not be able to enjoy and celebrate!

Wet Wet Wet Weekend!

It had been a really wet weekend. Ever since Friday evening, it had been raining non-stop, or rather, it rained, stopped, rained, stopped, and essentially this went on all the way until last night. This morning the breeze is still cool and windy.

Luckily right now it is bright and shining all over. Hopefully that was the last spurt of rain and the rainy season has finally let up!

Snowing In The Tropics?

It started raining heavily all of a sudden. Just next to me at my office, I saw this scene and I could not resist taking a picture!

Does it look like it is snowing here, or what?

Of course, it cannot be seen clearly, but if you like, click on the picture to enlarge it. You should be able to see the raindrops that look a lot like icicles at the end.

This is one phenomenon of nature that one can never see here!

An Eventful Interview

I was supposed to go for another interview at an offshore fiduciary services company today, but what would have been a smooth process turned out to be so dramatic!

My interview was at 5:30pm in the evening, so I left my office at around 4:30pm, intending to take ample time to arrive at the company. I thought of taking a bus, which would take about half an hour the most, based on past experiences.

However, when I left my office, it was raining very heavily, that I was stranded. My office area consists of lots of buildings and hardly any shelter, so it was quite impossible going all the way downhill, down the stairs, go up the overhead bridge, and then reach the bus stop in the rain. I waited a while and then decided to call a cab.

However, no cabs were available despite calling for so long. I then called my headhunter and explained to her the situation. She said she would inform the company that I would be late. I waited for about half an hour, before the rain finally let up a bit at 5:20pm. So I decided to just brave it and go to the bus stop.

When I reached the bus stop, the bus I wanted to take just left. I waited about ten minutes for the next bus. I finally took the bus at 5:40pm, and called the headhunter again, telling her I was on the way, and that I would probably reach about 6:20 or thereabouts.

However, because some of the roads were still closed due to the Formula One race, plus the fact that it was still raining and the ground was still wet, I was caught in a very bad massive traffic jam, all the way from the highway to past the railway station. Vehicles were literally not moving at all! So I called my headhunter again and explained to her the situation. She said it was not a problem as the interviewer was willing to wait until 7:00pm or thereabouts.

The traffic became a bit smoother only when the bus passed the railway station and turned into the business district. Finally, I reached the bus stop at the nearest train station at the location at around 6:45pm. Because the ground was still wet and slippery and I was wearing a new pair of heels, I could not walk as fast as I wanted. I reached the company only at 7:00pm.

Luckily the interviewer was quite nice and understanding. However, the firm turned out to be a service provider (as I guessed), and not an in-house role. So even though the interviewer was nice, I did tell her my preference would be to look for an in-house role.

The whole interview wrapped up about 7:30pm. Imagine, I took more than two hours reaching that place, only to have a half an hour interview, and then it was a role which did not even interest me! It was a real experience indeed!

A Sick Weekend

What a way to spend the weekend! I ended up sick in bed the whole day! Saturday was hot, Sunday was wet, rainy and cold again. Wonder how long more I have to continue in my winter wear.

I got a constriction in my chest last week, then developed sore throat, then runny nose on Friday, and fever yesterday. So I ended up just sleeping and not doing anything else.

I missed the Volunteer training session yesterday and the New Moon Big Walk today. In any case, it was raining so heavily the whole day today that I wonder if the walk even went on as scheduled.

I missed two classes on Thursday and Friday and postponed my tuition class today as well. I cannot believe I can be this sick! It has been a long time since I had been sick for days!

Hopefully I can be well enough to go to work tomorrow!

Sore Throat!

Dratted weather lately! Heavy rain, thunderstorms, and I hope there is no flooding this time! I am down with a sore throat and runny nose. Oh no, how am I going to go for the training session tomorrow? I have been dressed as if it is winter for the past few days - long-sleeve turtleneck sweaters, and eating cough mixture and lozenges, but still, I have not recovered.

Seems that I better go see a doctor before I get worse, since lozenges do not seem to help at all. I cannot afford to go under the weather at this time! Hopefully I will not get too sick!

Flooded!

After all the heat wave going around, it finally rained yesterday. When I woke up in the morning as usual, I saw the rain splashing down in torrents. It would have been a day of rejoice because finally the weather cooled a bit.

Luckily it was not too bad on my way to work because even though there was rain and visibility was poor, there was no heavy jam. Hence I could still reach office early. By mid-morning, the storm had become stronger and only stopped around noon.

Then there were reports of the floods at Orchard Road. For those who are not familiar, Orchard Road to us is like our "capital", if we ever have a capital. It is the equivalent of Tokyo's Ginza district to the Japanese, the New York City (okay, New York City is more glamorous) to the Americans. Orchard Road is the place of branded stuff, designer wear, and the entire row and stretch of shopping malls. Needless to say, it is also the base of the great sale going around at this time of the year.

Yet it got flooded. There have been history of flooding in our little island, but never in Orchard Road. So it was a first that Orchard Road could actually flood. Cars were submerged, basement stalls were wrecked. One Starbucks which I used to frequent at an open basement was completely submerged. Stalls selling watches and electronic products were ruined.

All in all, there was a loss of millions worth of products, and some of the stalls had to shut for two weeks for massive cleaning. Talk about bad timing! Just when this is the season for them to make the most profit, they had to lose so much business. We are not even sure if insurance can be claimed since this is clearly an "act of God".

In any case, people have been kind enough to send me pictures of the destruction. I must say the workers here are efficient indeed. The flood was on until mid-afternoon, but by evening time when I took the bus that passed through that stretch, already the streets were clean and dry with no trace of flooding at all!

Wonder how the cars even managed to move?

Our newest icon - The ION
(which I have not had the time to actually explore the whole place)

Borders Bookstore (just below Esprit is the submerged Starbucks)

How ironic for the bus to go by at this time. We were all surprised indeed at the state of affairs.

Even though I did not personally witness the flooding and destruction, I do hope nothing of this ever happen again! It would not be a good experience to wade in knee-deep water and mud!

Under The Weather ...

The weather had been so erratic lately. Why must it always be so hot in the morning and then only starts having a thunderstorm in the evening, especially when we need to knock off?

I had been caught in the rain on and off and now I am under the weather. Is it because of the constant thunderstorms? Or is it because of burnt out?

Whatever it is, I hope to be on my feet again! It is really a bad time to fall sick!

Sunburnt!

I have been a lobster the past couple of days. Blame it on the weather and the scorching sun that seems to bear down much more strongly than before! I do not think I have ever experienced such hot and humid weather, despite growing up in the tropics.

We were at the Air Show on Saturday. It was very hot, very humid and very sunny. Besides we were out in the open with no form of shelter. I had to keep getting cold drinks and ice cream as the weather was just unbearable.

It was so hot that when we went to the display area and touched the aircrafts on display, the metal almost burnt out fingers! Any hotter and I feared the aircrafts would be on fire!

When I reached home, I could not wait for an ice-cold drink and a cold shower! My skin was painful upon touching the water and I discovered sunburn on my cheeks, and two colour tones on my arms!

Abnormal weather we have nowadays to be so hot in February! If the sunburn does not fade, how am I going to wear my new sleeveless dress for the new year?

It is really getting more and more unbearable to live here!

Getting Crabby ....

I went for a crab feast on Saturday. After all the heat wave going around, it was a nice welcome to eat in an air-conditioned environment, especially in partaking steaming hot curry crab with garlic bread!

Since it was a crab feast, we (all nine of us) also ordered salted egg yolk crab, kangkong, seafood beancurd and fried noodles. All in all, it was a great feast! After that, we went nearby to join some other friends to chill out at a joint, where the live music ended at ten-thirty at night.

The night was not any cooler though, which made my mood even crabb(pp)ier! How I wish I can have a real cooling mechanism right now!

Out Of Sorts Again ....

It had been a marathon of a week. Besides rushing through some work which are totally unnecessary but just because of my profession I need to do it, I had to rush an assignment that was due today. Furthermore, I went for my first ice-skating lesson on Wednesday night, and sent out party invitations to a gathering I am organising end of the month.

Now I am under the weather. Must have been the dratted rain that did it. I was caught in the rain on Monday on my way back from lunch, and the office was freezing cold. I was cold, wet and freezing. On Tuesday, the weather was hot, humid and the sun was scorching. Wednesday was gloomy.

When I felt my throat being itchy yesterday and started having sniffles, I knew I was down again! Luckily I could take the day off today to rest. Hopefully I would be able to recuperate during the weekend!

Three Strikes!

There was a thunderstorm on Sunday afternoon, at least at my area. I was at home busy repairing my laptop and watching a show at the same time, when I saw the zigzagging of the lightning followed by a loud clap of thunder. The next thing I knew, the electricity went out.

Just when I wanted to check on the wiring, the electricity came back on again, within seconds. Ten minutes later, the same thing happened. A flash of lightning, followed by a clap of thunder, and the electricity went out again. Then it came back on again within seconds.

Another ten minutes later, the same thing happened. A flash of lightning followed by a loud clap of thunder, and the electricity fizzled out, yet again! I was waiting to see when the electricity would come back on, but this time round, it did not come back.

My maid had to go to the storeroom and fiddle with the switch before everything started coming back. Three strikes and everything go out indeed!

Spring, Summer, Fall And Winter Dreams

Japan is a country with a quite varying climate. For instance, Tokyo can go up to forty degrees in the summer, while in winter, it is just a mere ten degrees or less. No snow. There are still green trees around, although some trees are bare.

For Hokkaido, the temperature in the summer can be from eighteen to twenty-five degrees. Not too hot. But in winter, it can go as low as minus ten degrees, depending on where you are. I have gone to some of the places in both summer and winter, and I must say, the scenes are very different indeed!

For instance, Noboribetsu in the summer has much more steam and a stronger sulphur smell. Noboribetsu in winter is more foggy and there are traces of snow on the top of the valley. The sulphur smell is not as strong.

Sapporo in summer is a beautiful place of greenery and flowers. In winter, the grounds are white, the trees are bare, the streetlights and road signs are covered with snow! Odori Park in the summer is a lively place of green grass, beautiful flowers and fountains, but in winter, it is a place of hard snow and slush.

Otaru in the summer is lively and the canal’s water is bustling, but in winter, there is snow and slush everywhere, and parts of the canal has frosted up, with a layer of ice. When I first went to the Ishiya Chocolate Factory, it was a fairy tale land with lots of small houses on the grounds. In winter, there is lots of snow and slush, and Christmas decorations.

As you can see, the same place looks so different around the different seasons. The world is a very beautiful and amazing place indeed!
