Chasing Dreams ...

Happy New Year! Happy 2013! Wow.. another year has passed and come so fast! I really hope and pray that this year will go smoothly, and I will not have anymore drama, upheaval, sadness and trouble henceforth.

Now with the approach of a new year, what do I want for myself? My top priority is still my love life. Despite everything, I still want to be with someone whom I can marry and spend a life with, and raise a family with. This has been on my list forever, but year after year goes by and nothing happens, besides fiascos after fiascos.

Next is my job. Notice my job comes after my love life? I always believe to put my family first, because I know once I have a family, that would be my priority. If need be, my job and everything else will take a backseat.

Job wise, I am all for upgrading. It is still my dream to be able to study in England. Why England? No particular reason, I just love the place, and what better inspiration one can get surrounded by beautiful countryside, lush rolling hills and quaint villages? I wonder if it is too late to fulfil my dreams? Can I really go overseas to study if I have a family? I know of some people who did, the spouse went to further their studies abroad and the other half waited for the next few years. Some of them left even with kids around.

I guess all one need is a very supportive and loving spouse who is willing to let you fulfil your dreams. That is what being a couple is all about, is it not? Supportive and loving all the way, and not a constant competition to see who is better and hold each other back.

For now, I can only dream a dream, of days gone by and hopefully the dream I dreamed will ever be fulfilled.

Planning For New Year's Eve

Finally it is New Year's Eve, officially the last day of the year. What will the new year bring? What will people be doing today?

For me, I will be going to a beach party of sorts. There is a live band featuring songs from the eighties, and there will be food provided. We have a choice between a five-course set meal, a barbecue menu, or just a drinks package. The five-course meal consist of a set menu with champagne. The barbecue menu consists of different kinds of barbecued meat, salads and free flow of non-alcoholic beverages. The drinks menu consist of three drinks. But all comes with free entrance to the live band and countdown party.

I chose the barbecue menu because it is cheaper and have much better variety of food. This is the first time I actually go to something like this. Most of the time on New Year's Eve, I would either be home, or out with friends or overseas or just go to a foam party. But this time round I thought of trying something different just to experience how it would be like.

With this countdown, I wish everyone a happy and prosperous 2013 and that all your resolutions and dreams come true for the new year! Happy New Year!!

Resolutions For 2011

I have stopped making resolutions as I always thought they never get fulfilled. However I realise that when one does not have a resolution, one tends to then get too comfortable and stop doing things. So this year, I decided to make a few resolutions of my own and to be determined to stick with them.

So what will be my resolutions for 2011? There are a few areas I am focusing on, namely slimming and health and fitness, religion, studies, and relationship, in no particular order as they are all important to me :

1. Slim down back to 45kg and make a point to exercise a few times a week, be it jogging or cycling or other forms of exercise

2. Go to church, not just on Sundays but every day of obligation, attend Novena regularly and the weekly Cathechism and singing

3. Work harder and achieve straight As in my studies

4. Save up more money

5. Be more patient and tolerant and decrease my frequency of throwing tantrums so as to curb my temper and have a better disposition

So there, my resolutions for 2011! How many will be fulfilled? I hope all. Then when another 365 days come around, I can do another reflection on the things I have achieved and the resolutions I have fulfilled for this year.

Tentative Plans For 2011

Happy New Year! Happy 2011!

Last year had been really fruitful and I am hoping this year will be just as fruitful. Already the first quarter I have some things planned.

First up in January and February I will he involved in the Chingay procession. There will be a series of meetings and rehearsals before the actual event.

I will also take on another tutoring job addition to the current one I already have and will start on the first Friday of January.

End of January I will be presenting for the first CHOICE weekend of the year. This time round I will be presenting more talks so I hope my experiences can still inspire and benefit others in whichever way.

Come March, I will be participating in the Cycling Challenge again. This time round I hope to be able to cycle ten kilometres without falling off the bike.

In May I will be going for a business trip. I have had leisure trips and some minor leisure-cum-business trip but this will be the first time I will go on a full fledged business trip.

Seems like it will be another fruitful year ahead!

Prosperous Tiger Year!

Happy New Year! I just came back from the usual rounds of family visiting as always on the first day. There will be relatives coming in the afternoon and then I will have another round of visiting in the evening. Hopefully this reunion will have lots of merry-making and joy!

As usual, people will ask the usual things like hoping I will be married off soon, hoping my parents will be "promoted" to another status, etc. All the usual niceties and exchanges, nothing new. Luckily my family and relatives are not too bad. I know some of my friends find going to reunions a drag as it seems as if it is a cardinal sin being single and dateless in front of their relatives.

Perhaps by next year some news will be brewing? No one knows right? Meanwhile, here's wishing everyone a prosperous and roaring Tiger year ahead!

Awaiting The Tiger Roar

So another reunion dinner had been completed. It is the same as any other reunion dinner except the number of dishes cut down from eight to six this year. And for the first time, my boyfriend is invited for our reunion dinner!

Now with the final hours of the year of the Ox, let us all welcome the roaring year of the Tiger. Wishing everyone a prosperous year ahead!

Start Of A New Decade

Happy New Year! Happy new decade! It was a wonderful start to the new year, as I was at the Masquerade Ball counting down. When the clock strikes 0000 on the dot, I was dancing away in the arms of someone precious.

It had been a while since I have spent New Year's Eve with anyone. In the past the New Year's Eve was spent at the guy's place, where we would have dinner with his parents, then he would watch the MTV countdown. We did not go anywhere as everywhere was crowded.

When I was a swinging single, New Year's Eve was spent either at home, or out partying with friends. So what had the New Years of the past decade been like?

New Year's Eve 2000 I was at someone's place, watching the MTV countdown. New Year''s Day 2001 I was again at his place, spending the day with his family. New Year's Eve 2001 and New Year's Day 2002 were the same.

New Year's Eve 2002 I watched a movie and went with a friend to the Sentosa coutndown. New Year's Day 2003 I went out with a friend. New Year's Eve 2003 was my cousin's wedding and New Year's Day 2004 I was at someone's place (again!). So was New Year's Eve 2004 and New Year's Day 2005.

New Year's Eve 2005 I was at home, having had terrible news that someone I respected and looked up to passed away from cancer at the age of thirty-seven. Hence New Year's Day 2006 saw me attending a wake.

New Year's Eve 2006 I was at home, bumming around. So was New Year's Day 2007. New Year's Eve 2007, I thought I would finally have someone to spend with, but after that weirdo disappeared, all the plans were cancelled. So New Year's Eve 2007 was spent with friends, attending church and seeing the fireworks.

New Year's Day 2008 I attended the birthday party of my cousin's son. New Year's Eve 2008 I was away in Japan, on a skiing trip, tumbling down the hill and seeing the fireworks in snow. New Year's Day 2009 I was again tumbling down the ski slopes.

Now New Year's Eve 2009, I was with someone dear, dancing in his arms while we were doing the countdown. New Year's Day 2010, I should be home cleaning my room for the new year, and perhaps go somewhere later.

I foresee this would be a wonderful year and a great start to a new decade!

Spring Cleaning Weekend!

Happy Lunar New Year! I have been a little quieter lately, because I want to take the opportunity for a long weekend to catch up on a few things. Like cleaning my room, for one. And studying and catching up on my notes. I am not a neat freak, neither am I a cleanliness freak. Those who really know me know I am essentially a big mess, in every aspect. :-p

Still, I have to start cleaning up because I have long run out of space, and it comes to the stage where practicality have to take precedence over memories and sentimentality. Thus, I threw away a lot of things which I used to keep. Like the dried flowers given by someone on Christmas Eve 2007.

Movie ticket stubs, theatre ticket stubs, I used to keep all those, but in the midst of cleaning up, I threw them all away. Twelve Hershey’s wrappers from 2003. That was a memorable day, but I threw them all away. In the end, that day did not really count so much as some of my other more memorable days.

Finally, I threw away all the cute boxes that used to contain trinkets, but since I have taken out all the trinkets and moved them into a bigger box, I threw the boxes away. The only things I have not thrown away are my old diaries, and the letters to and from someone whom I still keep.

Strangely, things given by other guys I finally threw them all away, but things given by my best friend and mementoes from my most serious relationship, as well as old letters from my pen-pals and close friends, I retain them. As well as old photos. They were so much a part of me, a part of my childhood and growing up years, that I cannot bring myself to dispose of them.

Still, at least my room is somewhat cleared. No more clunks of junk all over my desk! No more bags and clothings strewn all over my floor and bed! For once in a long time, I can actually see the colour of my rosewood desk again!

Another resolution – to maintain the state of my room this way for the rest of the time when I am still using the room!

(Belated) New Year Resolutions

A bit late, but I guess it is time to make New Year resolutions. Still, Chinese New Year has not gone by, so I guess there is still time! Normally every year, when I make resolutions, somehow I never really keep them. I do try, but external circumstances always tend to affect things in the end.

In any case, what do I hope to achieve this year?

1. Cut down in unnecessary spending.

That is something I have been trying to achieve. I admit I am not that simple a person that I eat just home food everyday and take bus to work, or wear the same things day in day out. But I do try to live within my means, and now that I am still in the process of building up my savings all over again, I am resolving not to buy another piece of clothing or another book or another DVD or CD this year. I have bought whatever I wanted in Japan, so I guess it is rather easy not to buy anything else this year.

2. Get my driving license once and for all.

Yes, I know I have been saying that for years. I stopped my lessons last year due to my situation, but I have booked lessons after Chinese New Year, and the last I stopped, my progress was pretty good, so I do hope I can achieve that once and for all this year so I can finally get something off my mind!

3. Slim down even more.

I have been happy with my slimming progress all along, but now that the packages have been completed, I need to be more disciplined on my own accord. Thus, I am resolving to cut down on snacks (that has been achieved quite well for the past few months) and not eat so much during the weekdays (that is a bit hard since indulging in good food is one of my vices). Still, I am trying to cut down during the weekdays so I can indulge once a week during the weekend!

4. Find a mate.

This is another thing that I have been saying for years, but this is not within my control. At least the above three can be achieved with some discipline, but this is one thing that no matter how much time and discipline I put in, I simply cannot achieve it unless the feeling is mutual. So even though this is what I resolve, still I leave it to the more unexplained elements of God, fate and timing.

Hopefully by end of this year, I can at least stick to three of my four resolutions!

Looking Ahead To A Good Year

My best friend sent me a message a few days back, saying we are reaching another decade of our lives. When we know each other, we were only sixteen-going-on-seventeen. Wow... that has been a long time!

Lots of things have changed. When we first knew each other, she was always the one looking out for me (actually even now she still looks out for me in certain aspects). I used to be naive and gullible (perhaps still am), and if it was not because of her advise and views, I would have started on the wrong track as that age was the year when I was really rebellious and kept falling out with my parents.

Come to think of it, there were a few milestones in this relatively short life I have. That age was also when I had my first relationship. Less than a year later, I had my first breakup. I was eighteen-going-on-nineteen when I met my second ex, twenty-three when I was proposed to, twenty-four when I had my second breakup, twenty-five when I got into my third relationship, twenty-seven when I broke up again.

I was also twenty-seven when I finally realised the type of guy and relationship I wanted, and had an unrequited love. The years ahead - twenty-seven and twenty-eight, I made a big mistake and ended up suffering, but emerged with more experience.

The past couple of years were one of lessons learnt and experience gained. In a way, I must thank a certain someone, because if not for him, I would never have gained certain experiences which I never thought I would ever experience in my life.

Now with the Lunar New Year and a new decade coming up, I shall look forward to better times ahead. Whatever mistakes I have made in the past and whatever experiences I have learnt I will bring it along with me to this new decade and handle things better.

Meanwhile, I have to finish cleaning my room and ironing my new dress for tomorrow. Here's sincerely wishing all my Chinese friends a wonderful year of the Golden Rat ahead!

New Year Birthday Celebration

I just attended the first birthday of my cousin's son. Time really flies, he is one year old already! Imagine how much a baby can grow in just one year!

It was a fun celebration, with lots and lots of food (in fact, we had to bring so much food back) and a four kilogram Mango cake decorated with Disney characters. The celebration was held at a function room in a condominium belonging to my cousin's friend.

It is a good thing having all the family members around, and seeing some people whom I seldom get to see but for special occasions and gatherings. Yet why do I somehow feel that my heart was not in it? Somehow I feel down and disturbed, with a heavy heart.

Is it because with all these family gatherings and seeing how people of my generation bringing their own mates and families, I feel a kind of deep yearning that it could well have been me, celebrating my baby's birthday with my spouse and family by my side? Is it because of the baby's celebration that somehow got me reminded of certain things I did not wish to be reminded of?

Or is it because certain things (tennis courts, squash courts, Disney characters) somehow reminds me of a certain person? Someone I have started to miss quite a fair bit, sometimes wishing he was around. Coincidentally I just received a new year greeting from him. I wonder if I am still in his mind as well?

I have no idea why I am feeling like this. Actually I do have an idea, because I have started to seriously like him before we had to make the decision to end any progress. Maybe that is why this pining is stronger than previous times. Looks like I can still be emotional and moody!

But I will live. I came out of a six-year relationship and a broken engagement unscathed. What is a mere few weeks and the initial stages of like compared to six years of ups and downs, deep love and attachment? If I can survive that, I can definitely survive this in no time!

I do not want to start off the new year feeling down and moody. I want to be happy and face up to new challenges and hopes. So I must resolve to be cheerful and happy and not let anything affect my mood!

Kicking Off The New Year

Happy New Year everyone! Start of a new year, start of a new day, start of a new life. I was intending to have just a quiet New Year's Eve at home, when I went out with Sentosa to watch Alien vs Predator 2 (very cheesy show, the first one was better!).

Then I met an acquaintance, but I did not like him at first sight because he smokes, not articulate and there is no chemistry, so I wanted the meetup to end fast. Thus, I messaged Sentosa to help me out, and the nice guy called me and faked an emergency so I could have the excuse to leave. For that, I thank you so much! :-)

After that, I joined the IGNITE church group for New Year's Eve mass and to watch the fireworks countdown. The fireworks were spectacular as usual. Watching the fireworks gave me a sense of loss that I could have watched it with someone else.

I miss watching fireworks sitting by the side of the bay, putting my head on someone's shoulder, with someone's hands wrapped around me, and we just enjoyed each other's company without talking much. I really hope and yearn for this kind of feeling with someone special again.

I received two inspiring messages last night. One was from my second ex, with a poem he composed on his own, "With each minute that passes, we edge towards the crossing of another year. And with each year, we look ahead again in hope for our dreams, our lives. May this greeting find in you that kindred flame of hope, that we all dream, hope and pray for may come to pass. Have a beautiful day, and a better year."

He is still so articulate! I did not make the wrong choice after all! I always wanted a guy who is articulate. By articulate, I do not mean sweet talking all the time, but someone who can write well and express himself well, because only someone with a certain level of intellect can express himself articulately through speech and writing.

Yes, I admit, I am totally turned on by brainiacs! The type of guy I am looking for need not be drop dead gorgeous, or muscular and beefy, or tall and hunky. He just needs to be intelligent, worldly and knowledgeable, and can relate to me when I talk about certain issues I care about or have an interest in. Oh, and he must be a gentleman and knows how to take care of a lady well.

Another inspiring message I received was from a friend, in Chinese, but essentially this is what the message means, "2008 is approaching! Whatever you had, do not FORGET. Whatever belongs to you, do not GIVE UP. Whatever you achieved, please TREASURE. Whatever you lost, take it as a MEMORY. Whatever you had gone through, take it as the PAST. May whatever you embark on in the future becomes your HEART'S DESIRE. Wishing you a happy and peaceful 2008!"

This message came at the right time, because I was still lingering on to a certain short but sweet memory. It is true that a budding relationship that was nipped before it had the chance to develop further is always the most romantic, the most bittersweet.

There is always this lingering feeling of "What if...?" I cannot help but feel that if things did not end as they were, would it have developed further into something more beautiful? Or would it have more conflict along the way since it is obvious our characters clash no matter how much we fulfil each other's criterias in terms of similar interests, goals, attitudes and values towards life?

Despite having such great times with each other, somehow we simply cannot connect on a deeper level, and what is left is just very superficial, on the surface. And since this will cause conflict and not able to go on further, perhaps it is better to end things before any further progress, so both of us would not be too hurt and not waste time going through the whole process only to end up nowhere.

Disappointed I am of course, because everything was so beautiful, and I really felt blessed in that brief time. Even though we were never officially together, I was very well-treated. It is true that if the guy is really interested, he will do his best to make the girl happy.

If I am to find someone again, I hope he will be a combination of those two latest brief dates. Plus being intelligent and articulate, and want to be with me instead of changing his mind suddenly when things are set to go somewhere. That is as perfect as can be. So do I still dare to hope for perfection? Well, I will wish hard and hope my dream comes true!

New Year's Resolution

Now that it is the end of the year, I have to start putting my life back in perspective. Honestly, what have I done this year, or these two years in fact? It is time to be focused on what I want out of life, especially since the coming year brings about the end of one decade and the beginning of another, so I cannot afford to be wishy-washy and frivolous anymore.

So what do I want in the coming year (and the years ahead)? Besides my job which I am trying to cope with, the next thing is my studies. I will be taking more modules in the coming semester, so I have to be focused and manage my time better.

I also have to grow religiously, which means I have to get more involved in church and parish activities and talk more to church-going friends. Perhaps I can sound my friend out on helping him out with the church activities he is involved in.

There will also be the normal resolution of improving my relations with my family members and spending more time with them. Just like on New Year's Day itself, we will be attending the first birthday of my cousin's baby. Time really flies, he is one year old already!

Next, I hope to get my driving license before the end of the year, which means I must be more disciplined in my driving lessons and advance theory test, so as to pass hopefully at the first try. An Auto car should be easier than a Manual car I guess.

2008 will also be a music year. I resolve to spend more time on piano playing, something which I have done in only bits and pieces the past couple of years. Playing the piano is therapeutic, and a good way to unlease frustrations and vexations, especially when the song touches the inner core of one's emotions.

But the main thing I hope for more than anything else? Finding the one special person to know, to grow with, to settle down with. Someone whom I want and whom God wants for me. Someone who is into me and who fits my ideal criteria. I know he is definitely somewhere, out there, waiting for both of us to find each other.

Which means I must be more selective and choosy and discerning, instead of just trying out with anyone who deems potential. That person must be the only one I can actually foresee a future with, a soulmate and one whom I want to continue seeing and vice versa.

Thus, 2008 will be a year of focus, discipline, religion, family and hopefully love. Now that the end of the year has come and a new year is approaching, I have finally found my direction in life and will work towards it. This will be the first time I actually make a resolution and ensure I stick to it at all costs!

An Emotional New Year

Happy Lunar New Year! Time flew by so quickly that the long weekend has come to an end. It has been a temperamental few days for me, being on an emotional roller-coaster, sometimes at the highest peak, and at times rolling around at the lower level. It is not a good sign being upset so early on in the new year. Each time I tell myself to be happy and embrace the new year, events happened that caused me to feel down in the dumps.

I wonder where my mood came about this time. Could it be due to the sight of everyone fussing over the new baby, triggering in me some sense of loss? Or could it be due to the photos which my Aussie cousin sent me of his newborn girl, which also triggered in me mixed feelings? Or the very touching speech my aunt gave me on parenthood and child-rearing?

Or could it be due to well-meaning relatives (as usual) asking about my status and when I will settle down? Or maybe it was due to the fact that it is so difficult to love someone, that sometimes loving someone wholeheartedly gets more upsetting than not loving anyone, because however much one does, is it worth doing anything if the other person does not even seem to be responding?

I guess what got me really upset is I inadvertently made my first brother angry. I would not mind so much if it was my youngest brother, because he would throw a temper just about any day, but after half an hour he would be alright. But my first brother is one who never loses his temper, yet now he is so angry that he has not been speaking to me for the past few days.

It started with just normal bantering, and joking and jibbing each other, as usual, whenever he was around. The jokes and puns resulted in a friendly and playful punch, which landed smack on the top of my head. The point in time when his fist impacted on my head, I felt as if my entire skull was splitting into half. I could not help it. It was so painful that I cried. Tears just started rolling down.

He went to get some ice for me, and when I put the ice on my head, I felt a bump. It was swollen! I never know the extent of his strength until now! Even now, the bump is still there and I still get headaches on and off. Anyway, somehow my mum guessed what happened, and scolded him like mad. My mum is the type that when she is angry, she will not mince her words, which resulted in lots of emotional damage during our younger years. Her bark is always so poisonous that one wonders how can one's mother ever says nasty things like that to her own children?

So now he is angry with me for getting him into trouble on the first day of the Lunar New Year, but I did not even say anything! All my mum did was to see me applying ice on my head, and she just came to her own conclusion without even asking me what happened. He sneaked out of the house late that night to cool off, but my parents called him back.

So he thought my youngest brother and I betrayed him. We did not say anything, but when my parents searched the house and did not find him, they would know he went out. But the thing is that he still laughs and jokes with my youngest brother, yet he totally ignores me. He could not even bear to be in the same room as me! For instance, when I went down to the living room, he would immediately get up and go upstairs, and when I went back upstairs, he would then quickly go back down.

Now I am really upset. He refused to talk to me so I tried sending him a message, but he had no reaction to that. Finally, I told him yesterday that if he really thinks me as scum, and refuses to even see me, then I will go. I will willingly move out if he hates me so much. I do not wish my mum and his relation to turn sour because of me. And he just kept quiet and not say anything.

So now I am just thinking - should I really move out? Afterall, I would not wish for things to become unbearable, we are all in the same family! But if I am to be treated as an outcast, I rather be the one to go away than to create more trouble.

Speaking of which, I received this from a friend, which I find so true!

New Year Shopping (And Gripes)

Lunar New Year again, and this time, I actually prepared by buying my own new year clothes. In the past it was my mum who bought all my new year clothes. I buy my own for all others, but during the new year, my mum would somehow manage to find very good and nice bargains, and the clothes she bought are even nicer than what I would have bought myself!

My friends scoff when they find out that my mum still buys my clothes. Just for record, she still buys my new year clothes, but for the rest of the year, I will do my own shopping. Most of my friends feel that their taste in clothes are different from their mothers, but for me, I trust my mum's taste more than anyone else's.

She is the one who taught me how to choose clothes that are nice, with good cuts, and yet value for money. What she buys are less expensive yet better-looking and quality than some of what I buy - more expensive and after a couple of washes, the colour starts to fade and loose strings start coming out.

That does not mean I dress like some dowdy middle-aged lady as well. I believe I am pretty well-dressed already, better than a lot of people. All from my mum's influence! She never buys anything that is too dowdy or frumpy; rather all the clothes she bought for me are befitting for my age and figure!

Anyway this year, she made no mention of going shopping, since she already bought her new year clothes in China last year. So I thought I had to go shopping for new clothes myself. Some people asked why did I not ask her if she was going to buy for me this time, but why should I? It is not as if I cannot buy anything on my own. Besides, I cannot keep expecting my parents to still give me things at this age.

Thus, when I was out last weekend, I bought two dresses for the new year. I saw a frilly red and white dress with a flared skirt and made of soft polyester material. That was not my first choice, as I initially wanted a red and white dotted skirt at the same display window, but upon thinking, the skirt would make me look much older than my age, especially if I match it with a blouse, thus I settled for the dress instead.

A lovely dress for any occasion! I can wear it for tea parties, or gatherings with friends, or dates, or even work! That is real value for money, instead of just wearing for a one-time occasion. Then I went up to the second floor of the shopping mall, and saw another dress. A sleeveless white and red dress. The cutting is perfect, and the design looks like those retro ones from the sixties. I love it, so I bought that as well. Thus, I have two new dresses for the new year!

The good news is that I have gone down a size again! I can go back to wearing size S now! Actually, I could wear XS too, but for my chest area, which for some unfathomable reason, had grown bigger, so I am not able to fit into real slim clothes now (not that I am complaining; I rather have that part bigger than any other parts!). If I keep up, I can fast go back to the size I wanted!

However, the next day, my mum called me into her room and asked me to try on another dress. So she bought one for me after all! It is a red sleeveless dress that looks straight out of an Audrey Hepburn show - mini skirt, big buttons and a big belt to match. I look so retro! I even have the earrings to match! I only need to style my hair into the beehive style, complete with long eyelashes and black eyeliner, and I will look like someone from that era! As I said, I trust my mum's taste more than my own!

Come new year, the same thing will occur. Like what Sumiko Tan wrote in her latest article, it is the same routine of visiting relatives, making small talk, and hearing well-meaning relatives asking when one is going to settle down and have kids. I love my relatives because they are my family, and honestly, they are not that bad as compared to some others I have come across. Perhaps education and affluence do play a part in one's behaviour, that the relatives I have do not behave so "low-class" or totally lacking in etiquette, like what I have seen from many people?

I am not trying to put anyone down, but the thing is, for Chinese people, they find it a routine to butt into others' business and try to dish out well-meaning but totally irritating advice. So what if one is not married? So what even if one gets married but do not wish to have kids as yet? So what even if one have kids but not married? Is it really anyone's business? I wonder if other cultures experience the same thing?

Despite that, I enjoy getting ready for the new year, despite all my brothers' complaints about the same "boring thing over and over again". New Year is the time where I get to see people I normally do not see throughout the rest of the year. And being with family is a pretty warm thing, something which no amount of money or success can ever replace.

Happy New Year everyone!

Here Comes Another Year!

Happy New Year everyone! So an old year has past and a new one has come. As the old year went by, I started to reflect on what I had done. Have I got my resolutions fulfilled? Have I had an enriching year? Could I have had a better year?

What had I done for the past year? It had been a year of ups and downs, my path had been pretty uneven, especially for the second half of the year. The first half sailed by pretty well, I was really happy and felt my life was complete. The second half went by in a more emotional state than before, with the loss of a few friends and being in and out of depression.

Despite all these, the year went by in a breeze. So what do I want for this new year? Of course I will want things to be better. I wish to have a better year than before. I wish to be more involved in charity and children's and animal's work, more stabilised where my career and love life is concerned, and a better relationship with my family. Also, I hope to have a breakthrough in life and go somewhere instead of being stuck in a rut.

Just now when we brought our guest out to see the fireworks, I told myself not to flicker out like the fireworks - a beautiful sight but gone within seconds. If I am to light up, it will be for a long time, and now that I am approaching another year older, I will know what to do and where to go.

Wishing all of you (and your family and loved ones) a wonderful and fulfilling year ahead!

Gong Xi Fa Cai!

Now that my first brother is back, I will not have a lot of chance to use the computer since he claims his campus computers are lousy, and not able to access a lot of websites, so have to use the one at home to catch up on all his soccer forums, where he is one of the moderators, as well as the many months of blog-reading.

Besides I have been putting in more hours at work in lieu of the long weekend, as well as settling my study schedule. My lectures and tutorials are on alternate weeks. Since I am only taking one module this semester, my lectures and tutorials will only be once a week, or rather, once every two weeks, since one week lecture, next week tutorial and so on. Not too bad actually.

The best thing is that attendance is not mandatory. Since lecture notes will be put up on the net and we can always call our tutors for any queries, we will not be penalised even if we are unable to attend classes due to work exigencies or other commitments. Of course, the best thing is to attend lessons regularly to be able to understand the topics fully.

Tomorrow is the first day of the Lunar New Year (or Chinese Lunar New Year to be more exact), which means today is the last day of the old Chinese lunar year. My bed sheet has been changed, my sleeping attire is new, and all the New Year goodies at my house have been put out.

On the eve of the New Year, my parents will bring us to the temple where my grandfather's altar is and pray to our ancestors, although my parents will not aks me to hold the incense and pray.

But when they started burning the papers (which I do not participate in as I feel that is a big waste of paper and harm to the environment), I would play with the two cute dogs in the temple until my parents called me to go. Then we would proceed home where we will have our reunion dinner.

Talking about meals, my supervisor brought my whole team out for lunch on Thursday. There is this seafood restaurant near my workplace. It was very crowded that day since it is the only restaurant around that area, so everyone who works around the area will go there.

But the food is good. We had lobster sashimi, then fried lobster head and tail, prawns, roast chicken, steamed garoupa, mee goreng (spicy fried noodles) and cabbages with mushrooms. It was a real sumptuous meal!

Anyway my friends all told me that their reunion dinner is either something simple (simple dishes with the family), or steamboat (easiest, just dump everything into the soup and let the food cook), or restaurants. But then if they go to eat at restaurants, then those poor waiters will have to miss out on their reunion dinners with their own families.

My family will have a variety of dishes. The reunion dinner is the only time where we can have expensive dishes like abalone, seaweed soup, whole chicken, big shitake mushrooms, pomfret fish, fried vermicelli and king prawns.

It will take my maid the whole afternoon just to prepare all the dishes, although since my mum is around today, I wonder if she will cook some of her special dishes? I have not tasted my mum's cooking in ages!

My mum used to teach me how to cook when I was practicing for my Home Economics practical lessons, but ever since I stopped the subject, she stopped cooking too. The best cook I know is my maternal grandmother. No one else can ever cook like her!

More updates about the New Year celebrations later on. Hence for now, Gong Xi Fa Cai to everyone and may the Dog Year usher in good fortune and luck!

Wishes For The New Year

Happy New Year everyone! A new year, a new hope, a new future, with new resolutions. New Years Eve (or New Years Day) and I was stuck at home. One reason was that I was not able to find anyone to attend the Sentosa Countdown Party with me, as my friends are either overseas, spending time with their other halves, attending other parties, or will get claustrophobic in crowded places.

The other reason was that my mum sort of grounded me until I cleaned up my room into a "decent state fit for a girl, and not a boor" in her words. What an age to be grounded, hmph! So I spent the day cleaning up my room, flipping through various female magazines for things to expect in the new year, and essentially lazing around. What a record, spending the last day of the old year by myself doing spring cleaning.

2005 has been a fulfilling year for me, with ups and downs. I passed the audition for the Singapore Lyric Opera. I started performing again, on a bigger scale. Survived a broken relationship (yet again), found new love and lost. Made many more interesting friends, mostly from the chorus group and blogging circle. Grew closer to a few friends whom I have known for a few years yet has never really got to know well. Went on two family trips - Chiang Mai in February and Melbourne-Tasmania in December. Lost and found a few jobs (hopefully that streak will end). Started blogging, after being inspired by a certain friend who is getting to be rather big on the blogosphere.

This year, these are the things I am hoping for (not in order of preference) :

1. World Peace (or to end all wars)

2. More Environmentally-Friendly Products

3. More Animal Rights

4. Creative Zen MP3 (already in the process of getting)

5. LASIK Surgery

6. Get baptised (also in the process)

7. Get more proficient and recognition in my job

8. Hair Colouring (perhaps I will settle for Copper this time, a change from the Macadamia Brown I used last time)

9. Second round of Hair Rebonding (if my unruly curls come back again)

10. Steinway & Sons Grand Piano (will not be able to be fulfilled but no harm dreaming right?)

11. Dance Competition (or at least a mini performance)

12. Able to travel to England (my friend invited me to stay with her and she and her husband will take time off to bring me on a tour round England and Scotland! Yippee!!)

13. Making new friends

14. Meeting up with more fellow bloggers

15. Boyfriend (well.... not that likely, but then in a year, anything can happen)

16. To have my first brother finally back for good (then he can get my youngest brother off my back at last!)

17. Pass my driving test

Hopefully by the end of the next 365 days, I can have at least ten of these fulfilled!

So thence my last post of the year 2005, or first post of the year 2006. Thank you for all your support this half a year or so. You are the ones that gave me the motivation and inspiration to continue writing. Hope you have a wonderful year ahead with all your wishes coming true!
