Appeal For Prayers ....

My prayers never really come true. Nevertheless, I would still like to pray and appeal for prayers for all the disaster-prone areas of the region : Indonesia, Myanmar, Philippines, Cambodia, Vietnam, Thailand.

There have been volcanoes, earthquakes, floods, typhoons, forest fires. The elements that work for you can work against you too. There have been many people dead, dying and left homeless. We come from such a priviledged society, perhaps it is time to give back to the community what we have.

So please pray for a miracle and that these victims of disasters will be able to see the light and move on in their lives again!

Attending A Cell Group Meeting

I went for a Christian cell group last night. It was the first time I went for a cell group after going to church for so long. It is a good thing I went actually, because I have to admit that I have backslided a lot for the past year. I start focusing on other things instead of what is most important - religion. Hence, the renewal.

Thus when my friend asked me along for his cell group, I agreed, as I needed to pray for my friend and her husband to be during their difficult period. It was quite an experience. My impression of a cell group is those charismatic kinds where the people do praise and worship and speak in tongues, but the one I attended was not too bad.

There was singing, then sharing, then praying. I swear, the speaker put his hand on me, I kind of felt my hands go wobbly and just had to sit down! It was as if something powerful overwhelmed me, something I had never experienced before, or rather, had not experienced for a very long time! The feeling was like, wow! Whoosh! And I just started crying after that!

Then everyone broke into groups and started praying for everything else, their heart's desires, matters that are closest to their hearts, matters which they really care about. Some prayed for their jobs, some for their personal life, some for their friends. All in all, it was a pretty good experience! I really should start to pay more attention to the religious aspect of my life, after so long!

A Special Prayer ....

Something my best friend sent me, which I find really meaningful and appropriate :

And the Lord God said, "It is not good that man should be alone; I will make him a helper comparable to him."

Lord God, Your Word declares that if I delight myself in You - if I enjoy You and seek Your pleasures above mine - You will give me the desires of my heart. Desiring a husband is neither evil nor selfish because marriage is honourable.

At the beginning of creation You proclaimed, "It is not good that man should be alone" and then You created Eve to be a suitable partner for Adam. In the name of Jesus, I ask that you would release the husband - a suitable partner - You have chosen for me.

Because the covenant of marriage is sacred, I ask for a man of God. Please give me a husband whose love for me is outmatched only by his love for You. A man who will cherish me and build me up. A man who will honour me and our marriage vows. A man who is a good father and provider. A man whom I will be attracted to physically, emotionally and spiritually. A man who will love me as Christ loved the church.

Restrain me from attaching myself to another man out of desperation. I will not settle for a relationship that is second best, convenient, or one that feeds my insecurities. Guard my purity, and give me the patience to wait. And when I meet him, confirm to me that he is the one.

Release me from the baggage of past relationships, and prepare me for the man You have chosen to be my husband. Free me from any hindrances to a healthy and godly marriage : insecurities, habitual sins, selfishness, emotional hurts. Dispel my unrealistic expectations that set me up for disappointment. I place my trust in You rather than my partner.

In this period of waiting I will look to You to be my companion and best friend. You are the One who redeems my life from the pit, who crowns me with love and compassion, who satisfies my desires with good things. I will not be anxious, but as I present my requests to you, flood me with the peace that surpasses all understanding so my heart and my mind are guarded in Christ Jesus.

In this request, I commit myself to trust You and do good, to dwell in the land and feed on Your faithfulness. I commit my way to You and trust that You will bring it to pass.

In Jesus name I pray, AMEN.

A Holy Day Of Obligation

Ascension Day.

Attended Mass I did.

Asked for mercy and forgiveness from God

As well as to forgive all those who sinned against me.

And I found peace.

Allelujah!

Amen.

My Path To Enlightenment

My brother accused me of being a religious fanatic just because I told him off for using my Bible as a coaster for his drink. It was my fault actually, I was reading the Bible halfway when my mum called me to try on a dress, and I left it on the table. Next thing I knew, my brother grabbed it as the nearest convenient thing for his drink.

But this is nothing to do with being religious. One simply does not use a Holy book as a coaster! He is showing so much disrespect to the religion! Just like one does not use the Koran or Buddhist scriptures as coasters or anything else for that matter!

Besides, I will never be considered as someone who is fanatical about religion. I cherish my faith simply because it has been a long and arduous journey, with trials and tribulations and lots of disagreements along the way.

I go for Sunday masses, uphold the no-meat Friday, and say my grace before every meal. The first I did ever since I officially started going to church, but the latter two I did only recently after my baptism.

Other than that, I do not think I am that staunch or religious. I do not pray so many times a day, or go for masses everyday, and have not even gone for Confession as yet. Plus I sin too, in terms of wrath, envy, sloth and gluttony.

Perhaps for people not in the faith, they will think I am religious by going to church or saying my grace before every meal. But these are just the very minimal of Christian living. People in the faith will defnitely think I am not doing much at all, ie I should pray more, be more involved in church activities, read the Bible more.

Come to think of it, I have not really thanked anyone for my faith. No doubt God is the one to thank, but it was through the influence of several people that I am finally baptised and confirmed in the faith.

Ironically the very people who influenced my religious path the most are the ones that I am no longer on speaking terms with. They are the real religious fanatics, not me. They have crucifixes in every room of their homes, plus a big crucifix and a portrait of Mary on the front door.

To start from the beginning, I have to thank my eldest cousin (now my godmother). She was the one that first brought me to church. When I was young and my first brother was still a sickly baby, my parents put me under the care of my eldest aunt and uncle for a while.

I was a naughty kid who wanted to go everywhere, so when I saw my cousin getting ready to go to church, I pestered her to bring me along. She agreed provided I keep very quiet.

So I went for my first mass, and followed her when she stood up, knelt down to pray, and when she sang. The only thing she did not allow me to do was to take Communion.

Then when I entered school, being a convent, there were first Friday masses every month, plus masses every first and last days of the school year, for examinations, Ash Wednesday, Maundy Thursday, Easter Monday, All Saints' Day and All Souls' Day.

Bible Studies took the place of Moral Education lessons. I went along with the flow. But since most of my classmates are born Catholics, so once in a while I would follow them to church. I learnt about God and His miracles.

I finally understood how everything is like in secondary school when a priest came and taught us Cathechism. He wanted the non-Christians to go to church to learn more about the faith, and I was the only one who wanted to go. So for that, I thank him.

After secondary school, I met my first guy who is a real staunch Catholic. I must thank him and his parents. His dad was thrown out of his family for converting and almost became a priest. His mum studied in a convent and wanted to convert since young, but her parents forbade her.

So she wanted a Catholic guy just so she could convert upon marriage. Thus, the family is brought up in a very pious way, probably because the parents know how hard it was for them to practice their faith.

Anyway his parents used to preach the Bible to me. My ex used to bring the Bible everywhere and preached the Ten Commandments and some other teachings to me. Every word he said would be summarised by a quote from the Bible, everything I did he would tell me to follow God's word. He told me to read the Bible instead of the books I love to read.

He got me involved in his church activities - choir, youth group, Sunday School. I enjoyed the activities at first, but it became a bit too much for me. I had only officially started going to church (and quarrelling with my parents every weekend because of this). All the activities became too overwhelming and time-consuming.

But despite everything, I learnt a lot from him. He made me understand the faith much better. For the first time in my life, I actually knew what I was doing when I attended mass. So even after he left me, instead of back-sliding, I continued going to church regularly.

Needless to say, my parents were unhappy as they assumed once my relationship was over, I could go back to normal and stopped attending church. Then I met my second guy and he, too, came from a staunch Catholic family.

His father is a third-generation Catholic, being part Peranakan. His mother converted when she married the father, against her parents' wishes (to convert, not to marry him), so she, too, knows how hard it is to believe in her faith.

It was through my second guy that I got to attend masses in the evenings, Novenas, learnt how to pray the Rosary. He was also from a Catholic school, coincidentally the boy's school opposite my school, and was involved in the Legion of Mary group.

So when I entered NIE, I joined the Catholic Student's Apostolate, and met fellow Catholics who are just as staunch (as my ex, not me). These Catholics came from all sorts of background.

There was a guy (my former President) who almost became a priest, and he is now married with two girls. I take him as some sort of elder brother and still calls him for advise once in a while.

Our Vice-President was attending bible classes at that period of time, and when the year ended, she got baptised. In fact, most of the active members were converts. Perhaps those born Catholics tend to take the faith for granted?

I have to thank them for all their religious sharing, and the other religious activities like retreats, Taize and Praise and Worship sessions which they introduced me to. But above all these, I must thank my second ex, as he is probably the greatest influence on my decision to be a Catholic.

I also have to thank my third ex, as it was through his constant disagreement, questioning and putting down of my faith that I finally know nothing can ever come in between me and my religion.

I also need to thank a few other people. Firstly, my sponsor for bible studies, who has been with my throughout my journey, and who has willingly sacrificed one night every week just to attend the class faithfully with me, as well as another friend who is also a stanch Catholic, who has been encouraging me all the way.

And of course, I must thank a certain person with the initials TRS who once told me to find peace through prayer, which I did, and who congratulated me when I got baptized.

And also the priest who baptised me, the Archbishop who confirmed me, my parents for finally accepting my beliefs and for being there for me when I got baptised, and last but not least (because I am saving the best and most important for the last), the Almighty Father Himself for choosing me.

I still have a lot to learn where religion is concerned, but I am ready and willing to take the next step and have a greater leap into my faith!

Say A Little Prayer ....

I have been reflecting on the use of prayer lately, which triggered off a discussion with my friend last week. I have always been told that we should not pray for what we want but rather what is best for us, but sometimes how would one know what is best for us? My friend, a regular Christian church-goer, said that only God knows what is best for us. So when we pray, we should ask for guidance rather than wanting things to happen the way we want.

But why is it for some people, whatever they want they are able to get, but for others, they can never get what they want? And every religion and denomination functions and prays differently. When things do not happen, is it the way people pray, or simply they do not pray enough? Yet there are others who do not even go to church except during Christmas and Good Friday, and do not pray except during a crisis, but somehow their prayers can come true.

Of course I am not saying that just by praying without any work on your part miracles will happen because they will not. The effort still must come from youself. So instead of sitting back and just relying on prayer alone, one must be proactive in finding food or shelter or a job or a mate for the family or self. All I am saying is that there are people who try so hard and pray so hard, yet the things they try to do never seem to happen. Then there are people who do not seem to do much and do not pray much yet what they want always seem to happen. Why is that so?

I never impose my beliefs on others as I feel it is each individual's free will to believe what they want. However, once in a while, I will ask my friends if I can pray for them in my own way, especially if they have important affairs which they must succeed in. Somehow my prayers for my friends seem to come true, but mine mostly do not come true. Why is it that when a person tries to lead as good a life as possible, his / her prayers are normally overlooked compared to others who lead a life of sin but yet things are better for them?

Or perhaps I am not staunch enough. But is being staunch the real issue? Christians are also humans who have their own quirks. You see some people being downright selfish and self-centred, yet when they pray, their prayers often come true for their own gain. I know of people who live their lives being nice to others and living as holy a life as possible, yet their prayers often do not come true as well. Times like these I do not wonder why some people just lose faith after a while.

I also cannot be a living example since my own prayers often do not come true. If my prayers come true, my entire life would have a totally new course of events. I would have graduated with first-class honours, or even Masters, been very successful in what I do, found a job that I can stick to, or gotten married years ago.

That is why although I do not like it, I still cannot really blame my ex for scoffing at my beliefs since he is successful in what he does, despite being a non-believer, but my life seemed to be going downhill for a period of time, despite my regular church-going.

But I am not about to lose faith. I still do believe that somewhere out there, there will be something and someone best for me, and I will just continue praying until that happens. Meanwhile, I will explore my options and exercise my own choices, so hopefully I can find a job real soon before I run into serious cash flow problems.

A Prayer For London

Dear God,

Please stop all the bombings and innocent people being killed.
May the Tube be safe and sound from harm.
May the people recover from their wounds.
May there be no more wars and fighting in the world.
Please forgive those responsible and may they realise their mistakes soon.
Please give the people courage and strength to fight against terrorism.
May the city heal and strengthen.
May the rest of the world grow in strength and courage to fight against what is wrong.
Please bless us with grace and serenity to change the things we can.

Amen.

God's Will Or My Will?

(NB. Context is rather religious in nature. May contain religious ramblings. Non-church-goers may not fully comprehend.)

I just attended a very inspiring sermon today. Initially I did not want to go to church today due to my throat infection. How am I going to sing in this state? When I woke up this morning, my voice was almost back to normal, I told myself I could not let my friend down, especially since I have already promised him and he is sponsoring my bible studies every week. Besides there was just this urge in me that I had to go. And I am glad I went in the end. Seems like God really reaches out to me in unexpected ways.

The sermon was by Rev Phil Heng, a guest priest from Novena Church (aka Catholic Church of St. Alphonsus). He was the most charismatic priest I have ever known! His sermon was on doing God's will and putting God first in your life. Someone asked a question : how do you know it is God's will? His answer : By doing the right thing. God's will is to let go of the past hurts and forgive those who have hurt you. God's will is to love unconditionally. God knows best what is for us as he created all of us. We have to place ourselves in God's care and He will take care of us as he knows best what we need. So sometimes what we want may not be what we really need. Thus, we need to trust God to give us what is best for us.

Alright, I know I am getting to be such a preacher. But I could not help feeling that the sermon was specially for me. This sermon relates so well to what I am facing in life right now. Which got me to finally understand : I may want a lot of things in life, but it may not necessary be what is best for me. For the past few weeks, I have been praying for some answers to where my life is heading. Today's sermon seems to be the answer to my prayers. Thus, I shall stop praying for things which I want, but should focus more on praying for what God wants for me. So even if I cannot have what I really desire, ie a promotion, pay raise, and Mr Too-Good-To-Be-True-But-Definitely-My-Type, I shall stop fretting and instead adopt a positive outlook that whatever will be, will be. If it is not what God wants for me, I am sure He will find something and someone better and more suitable for me.
