Diamonds Are Forever?

Diamonds are a girl's best friend, and during an engagement or wedding, girls will normally like it if they receive a diamond ring of some sort, which they can then show off to their friends. Of course getting a diamond ring is not (and should not be) the ultimate test of how much a guy loves you, but being girls, we all like to be pampered once in a while.

A pure diamond is sparkling and bright, and lasts forever. There are a few cuts to a diamond, namely princess and solitaire to name a few. Diamonds can come in various sizes too, like less than one carat to tens of carats. The common diamond is the white, or transparent type. However, there are some other rare ones like the blue diamond (as seen in "Titanic" - The Heart Of The Ocean), pink diamond (like the "Pink Panther"), or other coloured ones. Needless to say, these are much more expensive.

Diamonds, like other stones (sapphire, ruby) are so costly because there is a lot of work involved in mining and extracting them. Places where traces of diamond deposits are found will usually require hard labour and many hours of panning and extracting before a few small diamonds can be found. If one is lucky, he can find a big coloured one.

Unfortunately, those places rich in diamond ores are normally the poverty striken countries of Africa. When traces of diamonds are found, the natives are then required to toil and slave so that whatever diamonds found will then be sold to buyers (often white men), who then sell to big jewellery companies that then make the diamonds into necklaces or whatnots, and sell to the rich at exorbitant prices. This is why the rich gets richer and the poor gets poorer.

If only people know just how unscrupulous some diamond merchants are in obtaining the diamonds at all costs. In the show "Blood Diamond", there are so many bloodshed and killings going on just to pan for diamonds. Poor African countries often have rebels who take away young boys and inculcate hatred in them so as to train them to be boy soldiers to look after the miners. These children have been trained to kill without battling an eyelid.

Villages are plummeted, people are killed, houses burnt. Women and children have to escape and become refugees in a neighbouring country. Strong men are then taken to work in the diamond mines, panning for diamonds, and whatever they found will be given over to the rebel soldiers. Those who kept any diamond for themselves will be killed on the spot.

White men who set up camp around those areas will not bat an eyelid in killing all the miners and rebels, as long as they get their diamonds. Diamonds equal money, oodles and oodles of it, and people will not hesitate to kill for money. And all for what? Just so sometime later, someone will get to wear that on some parts of the body. Like what that journalist said in the show, once you see something like this, somehow you find the cosmopolitan life of gossip, materialism and drinking latte meaningless.

It is not stated if this show is based on true events. But it is not impossible that the diamond trade comes with a very high price, and I am not talking in terms of monetary value, but human lives and sacrifices. I do not think all are like that, because there are many legitimate organisations who go through proper channels and reasonable employment to mine diamonds. At the end of the show, the message is to stop buying conflict diamonds. Do not buy anything that comes with such a high price.

However, how would one know if the diamonds are illegal? The reason people get diamonds at any cost is because there is a demand, and a high market. The more affluent ones are able to afford and buy diamonds anytime they like. It is because of this demand that people continue exploiting the poor and get a huge profit for themselves. By right, if the diamonds are found on their land, is it any right of anyone to take away? Will it not be like stealing from the poor?

I have to be more careful if and when I step into a jewellery shop in one of my moods for indulgence. I have to make sure the jewellery I buy consist of stones that come from proper legitimate organisations, and not smuggled in illegally, especially not those that comes with so many human lives attached, because even though diamonds are forever, but lives are not.

More Bombings....

I seriously wonder what are the extremists up to. New Delhi got bombed. I wonder why India, of all places, will get bombed? What is the purpose?

Is it because India opened the Kashmir border to help the Pakistani quake victims? In that case, countries get bombed for butting into other countries' business, and countries still get bombed for helping other countries.

I just cannot understand why people must harm others for no justifiable reasons.

A Prayer For Bali ....

Those suicide bombers have struck again. In Bali. Why is it always Bali? Was it not enough that the blast of three years back turned such a beautiful island into a mess, and now the same thing happened again? What are these people trying to prove? If they wanted the world's attention, they have gotten it - at the expense of so many innocent people and the beautiful natural environment. Let us pray for the situation to be better and for Balinese to be strong and live on.

911 Anniversary

Today is September 11, the fourth anniversary of the unfortunate US twin towers bombings. Just earlier this month, there was the hurricane Katrina that twirled around the mid-southern states of the US, literally blowing things out of proportion.

There was an interesting article in the Lifestyle section of The Sunday Times today, by my favourite journalist Sumiko Tan. She stated that the US is a complex country, but one set to dominate the world for some time to come. US is a country of "loud" people (general stereotyping), patriotic but yet political bitter and inter-state snobbery. Of course, US is such a big country that the standards of living and class of people differ from state to state. If you live in Los Angeles or San Francisco or Beverly Hills, you will be of a higher-class breed. If you live in New York City, you will be the glamourous and sophisticated breed. But many states of the US are just simple, homely and wholesome folk, much like our heartlanders living in the HDB estates.

In fact, I may be more "American" than my American peers. My godbrother has been to the US for almost six years, and he does not know the latest American Idol or cool shows like "CSI" or "Chronicles", or the latest movies on screens, or latest dramas like "Desperate Housewives". He hates all fast food and western food and still prefers local fare and Chinese food. I have been following the American way of life and tradition for quite some time, having grown up on American books and shows and "Archie" comics. I like American food like burgers and fries, macaroni and cheese, barbecued ribs, iced tea, Buffalo wings and mashed potatoes. Besides, I researched on the lifestyles years back when I was so sure I would be going to the US to study. And I am all for the American (or Western) culture where parents and children are great friends and can discuss things as friends, instead of parents expecting the children to do everything they say. I also agree with the culture where the children move out when they reach college or adulthood and live independent lives of their own, instead of still being sheltered at the parents' place even when one is approaching middle age.

But the 911 and the Katrina incident do convey a few lessons. They show the world that no country or place is indestructible, even a super power and advanced developed nation like the US. All it takes is for someone to secretly hijack a plane and drop a bomb, or for natural disasters to strike. So it is up to the people to protect their own homes and lands and countries instead of taking things for granted and relying on the government to do all the work.

Meanwhile, let us keep the US in prayers and hope they will survive through this ordeal soon.

Memoirs of Hiroshima and Nagasaki

This month marked the 60th anniversary of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The survivors could still feel the after effects of the bombings. Due to the bombings, both cities which took centuries to develop disintegrated within minutes. Amazing the damage something so small can cause.

But were the bombings really necessary in the first place? Would the Allies have won without these drastic measures? Afterall the war in Europe had already ended a few months back with Hitler's suicide and the emancipation of the Jews. The situation in Japanese-occupied Singapore and Malaya was not that far off. The anti-Japanese forces were getting stronger and more people were fighting back. The Japanese army was weakening. Maybe it was just a matter of time when the Japanese surrendered. Ironically it took the bombing of Pearl Harbour by the Japanese for the United States to enter into war and the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki by the United States to end the war. Seemed like what went around would turn around after all.

I sincerely hope nothing so drastic will ever happen again. If there is ever another war, I dread to think what will happen. That is why those terroritsts have better stop all their actions before it is too late.

A Prayer For London

Dear God,

Please stop all the bombings and innocent people being killed.
May the Tube be safe and sound from harm.
May the people recover from their wounds.
May there be no more wars and fighting in the world.
Please forgive those responsible and may they realise their mistakes soon.
Please give the people courage and strength to fight against terrorism.
May the city heal and strengthen.
May the rest of the world grow in strength and courage to fight against what is wrong.
Please bless us with grace and serenity to change the things we can.

Amen.
