The Writing Process

Something I learnt in my lecture just now (which incidentally, the lecturer himself called it a "talk" since he said giving a "lecture" normally means something negative) :

Use ful Advice from Writer Richard Marius (of 75 Readings : An Anthology)

1. List your main points.

2. Think of first draft.

3. Write / Print it out.

4. Make radical changes.

5. Edit.

6. Focus on main idea.

7. Second draft.

8. Attend to details to heighten the third draft.

9. Final product.

Great tips! He said that the art of writing is a process, so it has to be done through many skeletons before the finished work. Thus, do not insult anyone by letting the first draft be the final product!

Now, I think I have more confidence to write out a short story .... if I can set my heart into getting it done!

As someone who wants to write (and is nowhere near being published anywhere), but who has read a lot of stuff, it I think the key is just to do it.

Not all writers think out their stories. Thinking out your story, plottign and planning are the recommended regimine. However a lot of well known authors don't do that. Margaret Atwood, for example. She describes her writing process as sitting on the floor with pen and paper. She does not think ahead, she just lets the characters live.

If you really want a good book on writing, get "The First Five Pages" by Noah Lukeman.
