On the radio this morning, there was a debate going on a survey conducted on whether residents of housing estates would like to have a childcare centre at the void deck under their flats.
Extracts of the survey and interviews with some residents were broadcasted. When I heard what transpired, I do not know whether to laugh or cry!
The residents are mostly in favor of a childcare centre around their estate as it will be convenient to send their kids there. But, and this is a big but, no one wants the childcare centre to be built at their void deck. They said it will be noisy, they lose the comfort and convenience of having a void deck, etc.
They all said they prefer the childcare centre to be built one or two blocks away. Who is to know the residents of the other blocks say the same thing?
Which is why I do not know whether to laugh or cry! You want convenience, yet you do not want to compromise. Where can there be such a good deal in having the best of both worlds?
This reminds me of some time ago where there was a survey going around in some private landed property estates on whether the residents like to have a bus service going into their estate.
All the residents surveyed said yes, it would be good to have a bus going into their estate so they need not walk so far out to take a bus. But they would not want the bus stop to be built outside their house. Yet for convenience, it would be good to have the bus stop built two houses away so it would not be noisy but they need not walk so far. Of course, everyone thought the same way.
This is really the era of the "I" generation - as long as it convenients me, it does not matter if it inconveniences others. As long as it is my way, it does not matter what others think.
If the society has become this state, I feel really sad for the existing and future generations ahead!
