A Maltese Experience

1. Maltese people must be expert drivers. The streets are long, narrow, winding, bumpy, full of sharp turns, and no traffic rules are observed. Kudos to my two cousins for driving us around in two vans. What a responsibility, to have sixteen persons' lives in each of their hands! They deserve two pats on their backs!

2. Malta is very rich in culture and history. It was first conquered by the Phoenicians, then the Arabs, then the Italians, then the French, then the British, before finally gaining its independence about forty years ago.

3. Malta has had three capitals. The first capital is Mdina, from 1100s to 1300s, the "old capital", the highest point of the whole island. The second capital is Vittoriosa, from 1300s to 1500s. The third and current capital is Valletta, from 1500s onwards.

4. HSBC seems to have a monopoly on banking services in Malta (besides the Bank of Valletta). Everywhere we go we see a HSBC office.

5. In summer, the Maltese close their shops at 4:00pm for a siesta, before reopening at sixish. Dinner will start only at 9:00pm.

6. The Maltese language consists of 80% Arabic, 20% a mix of other languages. But the people have bilingual education since young, studying in English medium schools.
