The newest 007 outing does not seem like an arch typical Bond film. Perhaps I have been too used to seeing the likes of Sean Connery, Roger Moore and Pierce Brosnan being sent out on assignments, solving the clues and links to the antagonist, then finally killing off the bad guys and bedding the girl. That is an arch typical Bond film, in my opinion.
Casino Royale was something like that – being sent out on an assignment, before he officially became a double O agent. He met the girl, tried solving the clues, et al. The only difference is that he really gave his heart to the girl and willingly resigned for her, only to find out she betrayed him.
However, one must understand that Casino Royale was when he was supposed to be just starting out. Daniel Craig makes a good Bond, if one can overlook his, erh, looks. Face it, he is not as suave or charming as Connery or Brosnan, but he cuts an alright figure as the most (in)famous agent around.
So it is perfectly understandable when the supposedly younger Bond gives in to his emotions and dropped everything for the girl he loved. However, Quantum of Solace deviates from the previous Bond films. Rather than being sent on a mission, he went on a revenge spree. There was a part where he was asked to hunt down the person who tried to kill M, but other than that, he did lots of things on his own initiative.
There were lots of clues abundant on what was going on, but lots of questions unanswered as well. The entire show is like a big question mark on who, if anyone, is the main person the secret agents are supposed to be getting? The scenes where I thought the answers are forthcoming are cut, or simply not shown, leaving the ending ambiguous and the audience hanging.
In any case, there is supposed to be a third instalment to this. Perhaps all will be revealed in the third one. Then Casino Royale, Quantum of Solace and the third film should be all lumped together into one big typical Bond film!
