"881"

People always say that local productions can never be compared to overseas. How wrong they are! Lately, the few local productions I have seen are actually better than some of the sappier shows produced by Hollywood or even Hong Kong. As locals, we should give support to our homegrown productions instead of being so biased as to think that all local productions are lousy, when all our local producers need is a chance to prove themselves.

Anyway, we caught the new show "881" on Friday night. The movie is about two singers who perform during the Hungry Ghost Month, about their struggles against rivalry, disapprovals and ill health. Everything about the show is good! Although it has a local flavour and mostly in Hokkien, but apparently foreigners seem to understand the show as well.

The director really took time to make sure all is perfect! The settings, the props, the artistes, the storyline, even the songs! I am not one who listens to songs in dialect, but I must say the songs are great! Who can ever guess that Hokkien can sound so refined and melodious?

The best part of the show is around the end, when one of them succumbs to ill health. That part shows how close the partners are to each other, how willing they are to die for each other. In fact during that part, there were tears in my eyes and I felt like crying so much! I believe there were people in the cinema who actually cried!

For born and bred locals, especially the Hokkien speaking community who believes in the Hungry Ghost Festival, I will really recommend this show for one and all. It is one show you should watch and you will not regret watching it.
