The Shawshank Redemption

I finally watched this show after getting the disc for two years and hearing about it for the past decade or so! Next show I must watch is "Atonement"! Anyway, it (the former) is a really good movie! This is one of the few stories by Stephen King that is not in the horror genre (this and the Green Mile), and I must say, it is pretty well scripted.

The similarity to the Green Mile (which I watched a few years back as it was starring Tom Hanks) is that both took place in prisons. The difference is that Shawshank is on prison life whereas Green Mile is more on the story of the wardens for prisoners on Death Row. In any case, Shawshank is about how one prisoner changed the life of the other prisoners for the better.

Due to his background in banking and his plans, he managed to generate a healthy sum of "income" for the warden and one of the officers, so when he had a chance to prove his innocence, the warden, for fear that their money-making schemes would become known, had the informer killed and the prisoner kept in solitary confinement.

When he was released, he accepted his fate on the surface, but he disappeared the next day, escaping with a suit, his prized possessions he kept in his cell, and emerged as someone different and withdrew all the money which the warden asked him to keep. The overall message is not to give up hope even if all hope was gone, and there is always a way to beat the system and bring the right people to justice!

This show was nominated for Best Picture the year Forrest Gump won. Morgan Freeman won the Best Supporting Actor for his role. Apparently, Tom Hanks was initially considered for the lead role, but he turned it down due to Forrest Gump, which somehow boosted his career, as now there can never be anyone else who can play Forrest Gump to perfection. Just imagine if he had taken this role, would Shawshank win Best Picture and he still win Best Actor?
