I heard on the radio this morning about an interview with a domestic helper, on how her employer (ex-employer?) abused her. Of course, when things like this happen, no one will know what really happened unless we are the parties in question. Still, maid abuse cases are getting more frequent. Nowadays, one sees or hears of maids being ill-treated in the newspapers and radio.
Which makes me wonder, why would anyone want to treat another human being this way? Imagine you are the manager or director of a company. Would you make your staff work for like more than twelve hours, with very little to eat, threaten to withhold the salary if the staff cannot perform, or not allow any off days? At least I believe the companies here still treat their staff as humans and not machines.
So why would a maid be any different? Is she not a human? No doubt we employ her to work for us, we pay her salary, but imagine someone leaving her family behind just to slog for someone else, hoping to earn enough to give her family a better life. Even if you do not treat her as part of your family, still, she warrants much better treatment.
Now that we have to clean the house on our own, we truly appreciate having a helper around. Not that we ever abuse any of our maids, but honestly, we truly understand how much she needs to do around the house now. And we are only doing part of what she is doing, since we segregate the tasks. She has to do the entire house, plus the outside as well.
So before anyone gets any domestic help, please, for goodness sake, be willing to treat her with due respect. You will never have a chance to go back to a clean and neat house, or have clean laundry, and enjoy home-cooked meals if not for her.
