On The Run ....

This year seems to be a year for sensational news. Just when the fuss over a certain actor's "indecent" pictures being flashed all around the web managed to die down, now the top local news for the past week has been a certain detainee whom people view as a terrorist has escaped and security measures have been more stringent to be on the lookout for his capture.

His escape created an uproar. You know those scenes one sees in television series and the movies, where a convict escapes through digging a tunnel or climbing up the small window? This is true in real life. He was using the bathroom and escaped through the window. And I always thought in prisons the toilet is in the cell for the convenience of the inmates?

Come to think of it, is it really possible to vanish into thin air in this small island that is hardly a speck on the world map, probably only taking up 0.000001% or less of the entire world's land mass?

How is he going to be on the run, with this place being almost totally flat with no trace of any mountains? The tall buildings here are hardly any place to hide in, and everywhere else is exposed, so there is always a possibility of someone spotting him. Afterall, it is not as if there are high mountains or caves and deserted towns for him to escape to and hide in.

But then again, this island is not as small. One may think this place being so small, one can bump into anyone we know anytime, but in fact, how often does one really see someone we know on the streets?

The chances of that happening in my lifetime is almost zero (except for a few brief occasions). I do not even bump into my best friend or any of my relatives when I go out! So perhaps it is not so surprising that one has not been able to find the detainee, despite the search efforts of the relevant authorities.

Anyone with his smarts (I suppose being able to escape unnoticed in a tight security area needs a certain level of intellect) can just hide somewhere inconspicuous, or put on a disguise or just blend in with the crowd. People here look about the same everywhere, anyone can just blend in and nobody will really notice you.

Or perhaps he just happens to be very lucky, that he was able to run away unscathed, and now putting the public on a wild goose chase, while he is probably enjoying himself somewhere, looking at the news and laughing at what he deems as the stupidity of people who are in a frenzy trying to trace him. Maybe his luck will run out soon?

Despite my admiration for his bravery, luck and smarts, I do hope he will be recaptured soon though, before one of our buildings or schools get blown up and innocent people and kids get killed. Certain crimes can never be gotten away with.
