Do you know the programme "Crossfire" shown on Channel U? I do not have time to watch television nowadays, but I came across this show while channel surfing few days back. At that time, it was showing a commercial of it. It is essentially a debating programme where members of the public can talk about issues at hand and voice out opinions. It is the closest one can ever get to freedom of speech in Singapore.
This week's episode was on a very interesting topic : marriage life. For those of you who cannot read Chinese, these were the points debated :
1. Is it acceptable for men to have mistresses?
2. Are imported brides better than local women?
3. Is procreation the sole purpose of marriage?
From what I heard, it was a very intense discussion. One guy commented that local women are materialistic and shallow; they only want guys who are good-looking, have well-toned bodies, are graduates and earning big bucks. Local women will not settle for a guy with less than a $5,000 per month salary. But if he goes to Vietnam, a whole lot of girls will throw themselves at his feet as they are all desperate to marry Singaporeans.
A few months back, there was an article on a Vietnamese bride. She said Singapore men are reliable and responsible, they would not womanise, gamble, drink and beat up their wives, unlike Vietnamese men. What a load of crap! None of my guys ever earned that amount! And none of my ex-boyfriends are what people will classify as drop-dead gorgeous handsome hunks with killer bodies or to-die-for looks! And there are a large number of Singapore men who womanise, drink, gamble, and beat up wives! I had a personal experience with such a guy – he flirted around and turned violent whenever he was not happy with the things I did.
And are guys any less materialistic or shallow? NO! Guys also go for looks and ladies who are well-bred and educated. I bet those Singapore men who imported wives from overseas picked the prettiest and most educated one of the lot. In fact, women accept guys more at their face value as compared to guys. Why do you think Patricia Mok and Abigail Chay is not married? Because they are not good-looking! Yet how come Sheikh Haikel can marry Anne Belle Francis? Or Glenn Ong can marry Jamie Yeo? Case closed.
Another guy brought up that if men feel that they cannot get satisfaction from their wives, then they will stray and find a mistress. I wonder why? What sort of "satisfaction" do men want? Is it not enough that married women have to cope with a full-time job, do the housework, take care of the kids, and still perform their wifely duties (or obligations) night after night? What have these women's husbands ever done for them to deserve such dutiful wives? Take them for granted, never lifting a finger to help out at home and still demanding things to be done their way.
But the highlight of the day was the opinion voiced out by the lady. She said marriage is for lifelong companionship and bringing up a new generation. Marriage should not be for just sex and procreation. Men should not treat their wives as maids, nor as baby machines, especially not as prostitutes. APPLAUSE! APPLAUSE! STANDING OVATION!

So what exactly do men want? This I cannot answer, having not been blessed with a Y chromosome. But what do women want? Just a reliable and responsible man who can take care of them and make their lives special as they journey through the rest of their lives together. Someone worth carving a future with. Every woman wants to get married. That is why their wedding day has to be so special as it is the first day of the rest of their lives.
