Public Places = No Smoking

I was very happy with the news a few days ago that from July 2006, there will be no more smoking at hawker centres, food courts and open-area food places. I am rejoicing over this piece of news. I have nothing against smokers, as I always think it is people's own choice what they want to do with their lives, but personally, I find it very idiotic to spend money to indulge in something that will ultimately ruin you and the people around you.

Perhaps it is due to the fact that none of my family members smoke, all the way from my great-grandparents' times, so maybe my nose is ultra sensitive to cigarette smoke. I can smell someone smoking from 50 metres away. Even at a coffeeshop, I can tell who is smoking at which table when my friends cannot even smell a thing! The coffeeshops and food courts should have banned smoking long ago. It is not only unhygienic as there is food all around, but it is causing danger to others who are exposed to second-hand smoke.

I am glad to have pretty decent friends who may drink but do not smoke. In fact, I only know of six people who actually smoke. I have no qualms making friends with smokers, as these are all part of social interaction and etiquette, but I will never consider a guy once he smokes. The moment any guy I may be considering start puffing away, he will be dropped from my eligible list. I cannot live with someone who reeks of stale cigarette smoke all the time as my nose will not be able to take it. Besides, second-hand smoke is so much more dangerous than the original nicotine the smokers themselves take in. Why must I (or my family) be exposed to the dangers of something that may cause lung cancer?

If anything is worse than guys smoking, it is ladies' smokers. Guys smoke probably to show how macho they are, or how they want to fit in, especially if all their buddies smoke. (OK, I am making a generalised statement here, this does not apply to all guys, so guys out there, please do not come after me.) I really wonder why must some ladies resort to smoking? The image they portray is just so uncouth and degrading.

Can guys really accept a lady who smokes? I know none of my ex-boyfriends will never accept a lady who smokes, being non-smokers themselves. Even my brothers and my guy friends have declared they will never go after a girl who smokes. It is more dangerous for a lady to smoke, especially if she is pregnant or lactating.

Besides, cigarette smoke dries up your skin, causes wrinkles around your mouth, and stains your fingernails. Is it worth it to sacrifice your beauty, health and youthfulness just for some expensive hobby that will destroy your life? Strangely, among my friends, there are more female smokers than male smokers. I know of at least four female friends who smoke, compared to only two male friends. And my closest male friends all do not smoke.

I am rather disturbed that despite all the education and horror messages on what smoking does to your inner body, there are still a large number of smokers, and the number of juvenile smokers have increased. I guess ultimately the parents play a major role. If parents smoke, then the children will somehow follow suit one day, no matter how the schools and media educate them. I actually witnessed a mother smoking right in front of her daughter! I seriously wonder what sort of message and upbringing these poor kids will have.

Having said that, I emphasise once again that it is the individual's free will whether to smoke or not to smoke. However, I feel smokers should smoke at designated smoking areas and not in public places, especially not in public food centres. Most of the eating places have areas for smokers and non-smokers nowadays.

And one should never smoke in front of one's children. You are not just harming them by giving them all the second-hand smoke, but also inculcating the wrong values and habits in them. Children look up to their parents as the ultimate role model, so parents should do their parts to be the best example they can be for their children.

I too personally dislike smoking, and I would put a lady that smokes, even though she might look great otherwise, waaay down on my 'target list'. Even though I am pretty close to be on the 'beggars can't be choosers list' when it comes to r/s matters ><.

There you go ladies, if you want my paws off your cute *insert body part*, light up that cancer stick!

Having said that, I have also learnt that smoking is one of the means for socializing, and that sometimes people are sort of 'forced' into the habit (although I do not think this really applies in Singapore). It is a little lengthy to explain, but maybe I could write it out one day in my blog.

So my statistics are pretty accurate. Most guys will not like a lady who smokes.

I think being "forced" into the habit is rather a pathetic excuse. Be it socialising or fitting in, if people really respect you, they will not "force" you into anything you do not wish to do. Thus I guess it is all up to the individual whether to follow the trend or continue his / her own clean ways. If one is not willing to fall into temptation, then no one can drag him / her into it.
