Charity = Commercialism?

I just rejected another guy today. But at least he was gentlemanly and sweet about it and I appreciate that. Actually he is a nice person. Maybe I am being too choosy. But my heart is so small that it does not have the capacity to love more than one person at a time. So until my love and affections for a particular person has been totally buried, I do not think I will be able to accept anyone else. It will not be long though since I have already made up my mind what to do. I believe it will be much easier to let go this time since I have not told him directly and we have not been involved with each other. So who knows? Perhaps I may be ready for another relationship within the year.

On my way back from my voice lessons just now, I was thinking of the current events of late. Topmost on my mind is the controversy surrounding NKF. It is supposed to be a charitable foundation where people donate money to help dialysis patients. Yet NKF is rich enough to have enough reseves to last for decades. Besides, I got a true account from my friend that NKF also selects people into the dialysis program.

I find it really disturbing. First there were all these shows on raising money to help the poor kidney patients, on the other hand the CEO of a charitable organisation is earning eons of money. Actually CEOs all fly first-class, but I guess just because he is the CEO of a charitable organisation, he is slammed for flying first-class on public funds. Which sparked off all the controversy in the first place.

But the point is not whether it is a charitable organisation. I never could believe in all those shows to help raise money for charity. No doubt a lot of work went into the planning and organising and stunts, but I feel that charity should come from the heart. It is people's free will to donate and help out at charitable events. Charity should not be for publicity or commercialism. What is the use of donating if all you want is to win the prizes featured? I donate a regular sum to the Community Chest every month. I will still donate even without all the shows and prizes as I genuinely hope to help the poor and disabled in any way I can.

If people have become so materialistic to donate money just because there is publicity and prizes available, then I find it so sad indeed. Charity is to give because you really want to, and not expecting anything in return. If you give and expect to win things or just to support your favourite stars in action, then that is not charity.
